Chop or Not
on: October 21, 2014, 07:34:14 PM
Hi there,

My soldier is a 98 with a lanyard ring, should I chop it off for a better feel or not?
Maybe get a Pioneer and chop that rather?

I think it is totally personal, I myself do like the option to have lanyards on my SAK, and probably will keep it if I were you.

Its my second ever SAK replacing the identical one my Dad gave me in the 80s that I lost.
Got it in 2000 and its going nowhere but in my pocket.

I am getting a lot of knives on the weekend and a Pioneer could be added.

Chop it off. Then add a bail to it.

If it's a user, and you want it to be more comfortable, then I'd say to chop it off!

OR... buy an Alox Electrician.  no lanyard ring out-of-the-box and that ever so useful sheepsfoot electrician's blade.

No hollow rivet - so not possible  :o

I think everybody's answers are steered by whether they lean towards being more of a 'collector' or a more of a 'user'
Which are you? - Then act accordingly!!

Or sell the rare Soldier to SAKguy or Caranthanus  :D

PS. Is the key ring attachment really so uncomfortable ???

I have certainly never thought so. I didn't realize so many people disliked it until reading on this forum, kind of surprising to me.

The lanyard has kept my Farmer from going over the side of the boat and out of the tree stand.  Worth it as far as I am concerned.

Depends on hand size and how you grip the knife. I found this out painfully back in '83 so I cut one off. That was an Old Cross red Pioneer which was then a current production knife and wholesale to my store for about 13.00. 31 years later and with arthritis, I collect more than I use so the keyrings stay on.

The SI bail solves all these problems IMO. I wish Vic would go back to it.

98 is a very important year in my life...the birth of my first child.  I have tried to get every 98 I hear of.  I will gladly trade you a custom vic for the 98.  I will even chop the key ring for you  :D

My 98 Pioneer has been my EDC for this month, and I had carried it quite a bit before that also.  The lanyard ring used to bug me, that is, until I got some paracord lanyards.  I don't think I'd want to go without it now.

I was going to vote for chopping it, but this is an offer too good to pass up IMHO...

I find the keyring annoying.  My SAK now resides in a custom Hanks by hank pocket organizer or a the bottom of my pocket.  It's annoying if there is a twist tool onboard such as a phillips.  Whatever works.  I vote for taking me up on my offer...

Thanks Rick but I will have to decline for now.
I bought this in Zurich 14 years ago and have carried it a LOT so I'm quite attached to it.

Does not mean I wont buy a custom from you ;)
I've offered to get someone those 5x SA Solo's and once I have worked out the shipping to deepest darkest Africa I may ask a reciprocal favor from him.

But the whole swap thing does have an appeal, logistics not withstanding.
Whats cooler? A knife bought in Switzerland or a custom knife swapped for one you bought in Switzerland?  Hows that for history.  >:D >:D >:D

Not going to carry it a lot any more, give it a little retirement from its hard life.

Meet its new stand in.
