Help with Spyderco
on: November 02, 2014, 09:22:11 PM
So I walked by this shop today and saw that beauty:

Can anyone tell me which model it is and if that is a good/acceptable price (~265 USD also bear in mind that if I have to order it over the internet I pay at least 20 USD shipping and 30+ USD in fees).

Also, it says VG-10 on the blade.

Thanks for your help.

Do you know the model name. I cannot identify the model. I thought Chapparal or Sage at first, but I do not think it is either of those.

Even with not being able to identify the model my gut feeling is that price is much to high, especially for a knife with VG-10 blade steel.

Something looks odd about the knife as well.

For the $50 in fees plus the price of a Spyderco (Say Paramilitary II) in the USA you could have something else for much cheaper in a S30V blade steel.

Thanks for the answer, thats what I figured, those knifes are just way to expensive here

As for the model, I thought it might be a "Native 5", hole position would fit, but I can't find it with VG10 steel.

Could be a Native 4?
Personally, I would not buy it at that price.
It would have to be lots cheaper just to be considered.

Guess that settles it. I have to admit that VG10 SV40 etc. are Greek to me, actually worse Greek I understand a bit :D. Anyway, expect a thread here in the not that near future asking for more help, finding my a first quality folder.

The more you can tell us the better. Past knife experiance, types you've used, ones you own now, intended use, your method of sharpening, price bracket, legal restrictions etc etc.

I know, but I have pretty particular taste and a pretty good sense on what the knife should look like. Actually, the above fits the description very well.

Anyway, so you can prepare your answer (there is other stuff on my list that needs to be dealt with first).

- No thumb stud but thumb hole
- Blade length roughly 6 to 8 cm
- Non serrated blade
- Blade shape should be similar to the knife above
- I don't like it when you can look through the knife (I guess that means a back-spring / back-lock)
- The backside should be as pretty as the front, seriously a knife is a 3D object it should look good from all angles.
- No cheap handles (ok this is not so well defined, but I don't like the plastic handles on the cheaper Spydercos). See image below, except for the 2nd to the right, all those are inacceptable

Once I get around, I will probably illustrate my point with some more images :P

For a poll, I would have to know what Knife I want (and what is available, but since I can't tell Ti from Pb, that would be difficulte).

It is a Native 4

I had suggested the Native 5 LW but I missed the part of not wanting cheap handles. So removed the link. If you dont want the cheaper handle materials you are going to spend some money. You can find Native 5's for around the 150 to 175 range w/S35V blade steel and carbon fiber handles.     :)

Price isn't bad given your import fee, the native 5 CF goes for $199. Since you don't want plastic handles that limits your options to knives that's $100+, and not want to see through the handles leaves you with lockback which usually are on the higher end of price range.

That alone will heavily restrict your choices. Not many brands apart from Spyderco have the hole in the blade for OHO.

I know, I will have to try out flippers, but I doubt that I like them.

I don't collect, so it needs to be as pretty as my current folder but, better quality. :D

Delica G10 perhaps?

I'm not sure what your specific issue with FRN is, it's an extremely tough handle material.

The Spyderco FRN handles are a great invention. They are very strong, they are lightweight, they don't slip, they are very flat so the blades can be pocketed easily, they have a great selection of pleasurable colors, they give a nice opening sound, they take a clip in 4 different ways, you can adjust the tension and disassemble the knife easily. In general I like the way they make the knife look construction business and not tactical. With the ablity to open and close one handed with ease, the strong backlock and the drop point blades, I believe that Delicas and Enduras are among the best multi function knives.
There are always the options af cheap knives that look even more technical than tactical, like the Opinels and Victorinox Sentinels (or the new Rangers).
