Pioneer with Charge TTi main blade?
on: November 03, 2014, 08:59:20 PM
Just fantasising, really, but my ideal EDC would be a Victorinox alox Pioneer, with the main, OHO, S30V blade from a Charge tti and the back spring (or "lock"up) of a Spyderco UKPK.

Has anyone done anything like this? ie:

  • Cut away a thumb gap in one of the alox scales
Used a different style main blade to the stock one
Replaced the backspring with something stronger
Whatever else I'm missing in the process

I have a spare blade from a wave and tried fitting that on an alox custom, but there isnt enough 'meat' on the blade end to fashion into the correct shaped pivot.  It MIGHT work if you make a custom lock and retaining spring.. but thats much more involved than a blade swap.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

How could someone get the blade and back spring commissioned?

What about using a Vic OHO blade? Those might have the right thickness and enough material at the pivot?

Just thinking out loud, but that might be possible, no? Although the outcome might be as aesthetically lacking as the Wenger Titanium.

Now I'm marking you down for mentioning the aesthetic abhorrence that is a Victorinox oho blade. You're forgiven. Just don't bring it up again.

But... The Wenger Titanium! I hadn't heard of it before. Is it wrong to be considering spending £70 just for the scales? (Unlike all of the tools) they look fantastic.

Sweeeeet! Please don't forget us Brits and our requirement for UKPK-esque sliplocks.

The Titanium scales actually feel quite nice - I seem to remember a thread about the possibillity of modding it here, but am not sure where to find it.
The Titanium scale has a cutout where the Logo sits - the Wenger cross is a lock release like on the Rangers. But the Size and pin position should be like with the rest of the 85mm range.

And btw, I did not mean that a Vic OHO knife looks bad, but the blade might look out of place in a 93 mm chassis, just like the tool blade on the Titanium does, imho.

Hmmm yes a 111mm blade could be made to fit for sure, but I cant picture what that would look like.

Sorry, I meant that I think they look awful. On a par with most Spyderco blade shapes!

I really dislike most Spyderco blade shapes, though there is a version of the UKPK that looks a bit better IMO.
I have no problem with the 111mm Vics.

I think the 111mm OHO blade looks OK, it just feels bloody awful when you're trying to use anything else other than the blade. I'm kinda with you on the Spydie styles, but I really do like the Byrd Tern for some reason. It might be just that I've come to accept the looks because of how nice it is to use.
