How much can a G-shock take?
on: November 13, 2014, 08:09:15 PM
Inspired by the Victorinox INOX campaign, I  thought Id do a little experiment to see how much punishment a G-shock can actually take.
Lowtech our very own G-force pusher found me a suitable candidate, a DW6600:

Here are some tests Im going to try: feel free to post suggestions for more tests.

-High drop on to tarmack.
-12 hours in the fridge
-12 hours in a freezer (-18 C)
-drive over it with a car
-run it through a spin sycle in my washing mashine (400rpm) wich according to my calculations should subject it to 35+ G's.

I can tell you the outcome of your experiment right now if you like  ;).

But since I do enjoy a topic like this, I would suggest to throw it in boiling water for a couple of minutes (I just hope the rubber seals have been replaced somewhere in the past).

As long as its water tight it should survive all these,i changed the battery on my dw6600 and fitted a new gasket that i soaked in silicone grease, ive done this on g shocks for many years as owned them since 83,sadly the gasket got twisted and when i jumped in the bath a dsy later it filled with water,so i took it all apart and put it in the sun,4hrs later i fitted it back together and it works perfectly, these things are built to last and ive abused them for years and never broke one, look forward to this test  :salute:

To give it a fair chance, maybe have it tested for water resistance beforehand - Otherwise you will not know if teh concept failed or just the roughly 15 year old seal.

Otherwise, I guess it will be battered, but alive as long as it does not take a direct hit to the crystal.

The G-shock series was planned to resist the "triple 10"
10 bar WR (nowadays all but the Baby G´s have a WR rating of 20 bar
10 meters free fall
10 year service life span (I have many older than that)

Bring on the tests!

If Zed can´t break it (remembert his triple crash day?) it seems to be quite indestructible.

I would like to offer: If it survives, I´ll send another set of (most likely used) resin to refurbish it afterwards to make it a wearer.
and btw: Did your G-1100 start ticking again with a new battery?

They pushed the triple 10 concept to higher heights, a lot of these tests have been done before and usually on new watches so the watches age could effect this test, saying that ve worn my old dw5600c in the sea and out on hard mountain bike rides with no issues, good luck  :tu:

I could offcourse up the speed on the spin cycle if it surviveves 400 rpm. My machine goes to 1600 rpm wich should subject it to 500+ G's >:D (572 to be exact)

But England is nearly Middle Earth, no? And it suits Zed fine...
I can surely find something colourful for you, though. Not that I´d be enabling anyone or anything... :D

I put it in a bucket of water over night, an it still works fine, so all seals are tight.
Then as a light warm up, I put all of my 85kg on top of it.

Result: it got a little dirty.

More tests:

Dropped it 3m onto wooden boards:

Not a scratch.

Ran it over with a Peugeot Partner:

A little dirty, but no damage.

400rpm spin cycle (36 Gs for two minutes):

No problem still going strong.

I might have been a bit pre optimistic. After soaking it in water and giving it a closer inspection a few damages has apeared. The back has gotten a few scratches and the protecive resin has been deformed and loose. You can se the gaps on the sides of the watch in the pic:

Everything still works though.

The gap was there before. The resin - especially on older models - is known to "swell" over time. On some older G´s I have seen it was so much that the buttons were flush with the resin.
So only the scratches are new. I did not send you a perfectly fine G for torturing, you know...

It would have been interesting to see how a cheap and cheerful watch faired as compared.
