I also put it a bucket of water, followed by 24hours in the freezer, and its still working. But all the buttons has frozen solid.

Going to be honest I skipped to the end but I bet it is still going strong.

I bet most of these tests have already been taken by my G Shock while it was on my arm. Through parachute jumps, diving in the sand and water, freezing cold out all night in the rain and plenty more.

Now if you really want to give it a real test send it over to me. LLST did not do so well but who knows.

See this is exactly that baffles me. Some G-Shocks are rated for extreme cold of -10C/14F. That's not exactly extreme and it is a bit off putting

The temp rating is a bit irritating,  that is right.
But it has to do with the LCD technology itself.
If left out in the cold (off of the wrist) many LCDs will start not to show the time, but either all or no LCD segments as the LCDs temp drops. Heated up, many LCDs will go black at a certain temp. Both effects will be reversed once the temperature comes back into a normal range.
The Wide temp LCDs can take LCD temps of -10 to +65 C without showing those effects. I think that a watch on your arm will not see temps that high or low, it would not be too good for your arm...

As a newbie to watch testing how do you think my watch would compare with the G-Shock?

Now, there's a comparison I'd really be interested in - I've got a Timex Ironman myself and am still contemplating whether or not I should try out a G-Shock.

They offer some shock resistant models, too.

In a nutshell:
I like the font of Casio LCDs better.
The nightmode indiglo light beats the Casio Illuminator
Timex often uses easy to scratch Lexan crystals
The functions are often easier to use without using a manual on Timexes
Timex uses straps with odd lugs even more often than Casio

Totally subjective opinion. I do own several Timex watches, too. But I come back to a square G regularly, as it does all I ask and I can use it blind.

I used to be a Timex man before I picked up my first G-Shock. I found my DW5600E to be a much better fit for my wrist and I've been a Casio man ever since. I picked up a DW5000 at a flea market and loved the way the heavy stainless case felt on my wrist. Been hooked ever since. I now have a DW5600C, a DW5025 mod and two more DW5600Es.

Oddly enough, there are quite a few Timex models that I like, but only the one G-Shock type/model that appeals to me (squares, like the DW5000, DW5600 and their variants).

fortunately, i prefer analog watches

it was the dw5001b that started me on g-shocks back in 1983,nothing compares to a gshock as far as im concerned,i bet that dw5000 was a bargain at a flea market  :tu: i wear my dw5600c now and then but prefer the modern light on my newer gshocks  :salute:

How much are G-Shock running for. I am sadly going to have to get a new watch. My pocket watch took a hard hit and died. So I have been kinda looking around for a watch.

They can run anywhere from ~$20 for a good, used watch upwards of several hundred dollars for the higher end models. The DW-5600E (my favorite) can be had for around $50 or less usually.

Paid $68 for the 5600EG from the bay. You can find it much cheaper if you are in the US though.

About fiddy bucks if all you need is the usual. Time, stopwatch, timer and an alarm. Included for free is awesome toughness.

I have yet to break one in all my years of Army Infantryman life.

@jacktrades - A DW-5600EG for $68 in the US? Hmmm, I must be looking in all the wrong places. All the 5600EG models that I've seen on the 'bay have been overseas for $80+.

Biggest thing that is making it difficult to choose is that I love mechanical movements. Love wind ups.

I know for sure the the G-Shock watches can take a beating. I rolled my Ranger and my hand went out the window during one of the rolls. My hand ended up shattered and the G-Shock's glass busted out but kept on working just fine for many more months after the accident. I used it the the same way I had always used it, even getting it wet from the shower and washing my hands. I think in the end I just ended up getting another one and tossed the roll over shock in the trash. I regret this now of course. I should have sent it in for new glass. I am currently looking into buying another G-Shock though. I am fond of the atomic/solar ones that Casio makes, I just don't care much for the city world time function that a lot of the better ones have.

First off, wicked-cool avatar you have there

I too love the atomic/solar but when it comes to the world time, I'm not familiar with a lot of the 3-letter abbreviations of the cities.
