I've never owned any of these systems so it is interesting to see what people do or don't keep.

Many people love the Lansky system and swear by it. I have my Sharpmaker now and love it so no need for the Lansky.

Congrats, I really like the system myself tho some have issues with it.  Be patient and all will come out great.  I have one now and love it.

Yeah I like the smiths and get shaving sharp edges but it takes forever with the stones provided. Only issue I have with the design is I get edges like this https://www.dropbox.com/s/kqi9phpk1d22rq8/2014-10-24%2016.41.24.jpg?dl=0
Is there a trick to prevent this or is it a flaw of the smiths?

Are you referring to the grind being uneven and getting larger towards the tip?

In my opinion it is from using a sharpening system designed like this. The long length of the blade changes with the angle once the stone gets that far out to the end of the blade.

It may just be that the system cannot properly sharpen a blade that long without constantly readjust the clamp. The only advice I can offer if you want to use this type of sharpener on a blade that long is to try and position the clamp in a way to hit the whole blade at the same angle. Depending on the blade length this might not be possible.

If you have a long blade, these systems work better if you sharpen in two steps.  The first step is to clamp and sharpen towards the handle somewhat, sharpen about half the blade then move the clamp more towards the point but not too close, just farther up the blade, then sharpen the other half of the blade.

Yes on longer blades two steps is needed.  Be sure to clamp each knife you sharpen the same place each time.  As with all sharpening I don't always choose the most aggressive grit, if you are re-profiling then no prob.  I think its a great system but it does take time.
