Grohmann Ulu.
on: November 18, 2014, 12:56:12 PM
I recalled seeing mention of a Ulu knife on this forum and came across this and thought I should give it a go. I believe it is a traditional Inuit skinning knife, but make a very nice kitchen slicer and dicer. My copy comes with a Kitchen block storage option, but you can get them with a leather belt sheath.

The company suggest using 20 to 30 degrees on both sides for sharpening.

Did you try chopping with it? What did you chop?
When used- did you find it more useful than a kitchen knife?

Tangent: that's made in my Province ;)

This is my first. Came so sharp I easily shaved some arm hair off.

I haven't used the knife yet...getting ready to head out for another firearm safety course class. I do like the design. I bet it would chop like nobodies business.

Thanks. It looks like an axe but with a knife grind. I guess the handle helps in skinning a lot. But it also looks like a mezzaluna Italians use for cheese.

The Ulu is an all purpose game-processing knife, and not designed for chopping vegetables.  You can slice meat by pushing the knife in and to the side (think butterflying a filet of meat) or skin by using a straight ahead push.  It was designed in an environment where the diet was almost exclusively meat and fat and little to no vegetables.  Of course, nothing says it can't be used for chopping vegetables, but it's a little unwieldy for that task.

As an aside, push daggers are illegal in Canada, with the only exception being a traditional Ulu as it is a historical cultural tool for Aboriginal people from the Northern parts of Canada
