Surge questions
on: November 21, 2014, 11:17:09 AM
So lets say just for the sake of argument I was going to buy a Surgeon, no wait I mean Surge.

Where would I go in a effort to save a few dollars but no worries about it actually being sent to me?

Since I put questions in the topic but can't remember what the other questions I had were I will go with this, is the Surge missing any tools? Seems to have all the bases covered I think.

Yeah all that is fine and dandy but are the scissors and comfortable handles worth the $100 it takes to buy a Surge? I don't think so.

Will I still buy one? You can bet your smurf I will.  :tu:

Still looking for the best place to buy one though. Used is ok too since LM has that sweet warranty.

And no replaceable cutter head. Not a real issue so far but would be nice to have so I don't have to send it in to be fixed by Leatherman should it get notched.

Now if I had an old/cheap SS Rebar lying around.

In answer to the original question, I'd say the "Multitools for Sale" or "Tools Needed" sections of the forum and have a look on EDC Source.

Yeah didn't think of EDC Source. Guess I always think of that place as Tims SAK store.

I have been wanting a new Surge myself. Sofar no luck with tools needed section here.

Seems that those whom have it, are not willing to depart theirs.

Ther is few good deals at Ebay, if you search a little... BO ones are not that much expencive than SS.

It´s blade size is OK

The blades on the Surge are big enough to no longer "need" to carya additional folder.
Have fun.

Michael

It´s woodsaw works well.

But being able to switch to a metalsaw or files makes the Surge much more versatile.
Have fun.

You can find them on Ebay and Amazon for around $80 to $100. As for being worth it. If you use your multipliers hard Lichbote, Joel, Zoid, myself and others, then yes. But if you just turning the rare screw, slicing an apple and cutting a stray thread, probably not the best tool to pack around. However, they are built like a M48 Patton, heavy, tough and can damn near tackle anything. There like a Wave but with armour plating and an awl.

The New Surge does have the Awl and Replaceable 154CM wire cutters.

The Surge is worth the lower end asking price IMO.  I first got the Old Surge and was not surprised how quickly this tool booted my Wave off my belt for work.

When I got the NEW SURGE it immediately booted the old one out.
Matt's has a video that really got me excited for one

Things I like about the surge I'm using

The outside opening scissors.  So far my favorite tool on the surge. You will never realize how handy they are until you edc one.

Large outside opening blades. They have replaced the one hand folding knife always carried. Having both fully serrated and plan edge blades I feel I can cut whatever I need to with it.

The saw holder is nice. Having the right tool for the job makes things easier.  I carry a few different saw blades to cut different things.

Complete tool setup in one tool. It has it all

Things I don't like.

I'd like a Phillips but I do use the bit driver with a extension often.

The clip doesn't fit.

The blade steel could be better on BOTH blades. There 420hc is ok but I'd prefer something better.

It's huge and heavy. It tool awhile to get used to and it still feels like a brick in my pocket .

I'm going to post this. IL add some more thought later.

stupid work

Oh man that video may be the straw and stuff. It is buffering now.

You can buy different blade for the holder somewhere?

Yeah Rebar/ST300 for the win. If the ST300 had outside opening stuff it would be an impossible decision.

The clip doesn't fit.

Pocket carry this beast?! Maybe in like a Carhart jacket but not your jeans right?

The blade steel could be better on BOTH blades. There 420hc is ok but I'd prefer something better.

No S30V blade you can buy like the Wave huh? Maybe just build a mini surge like Kamp?

It's huge and heavy. It tool awhile to get used to and it still feels like a brick in my pocket .

Pfft I got that problem already!

I believe Matt is a member here.  If I am recalling correctly he lost his Surge then got a call and some one found it where he was working last.

Anyway, you can buy the saw blades anywhere the sell T shank blades.

I turn a fair amount of all types of screws and the LM bits haven't failed me yet.

I carry mine in a sheath and while the pocket clip "works" on the Surge its just to big to me to pocket carry.

I know many here are more knowledgeable than me on blade steels but the steel for most applications is fine.  I cut anything from rubber to plastic and have found the blade to be more than adequate.  I also routinely ( weekly ) use ceramic rods to touch it up as I do will all my blades.

Blade exchanger is a great idea.

Carrying all them blades in your front pocket not so much. How do you carry them around?

I carry some in the provided plastic sheath and the others ride in the nylon sheath the tool came with.

The blade exchanger puts this tool over the top especially when adding the LM bits to this tool.  If you saw anything from wood to metal then this is the way to go.

The plastic sheath the extra blade came in holds a few of the thinner saw blades ok.  Kam made a duct tape sheath iirc and posted a how to somewhere.

Some details about my Surge kit that I EDC in computer bag.
I use ST300 sheath to store the bit kits and Piranha, and all saw blades go into the tube came with PWII.
The main reason I don't EDC Surge anymore is that one needs to carry all the accessories to take FULL advantage of the mighty Surge.

The Surge itself I am fine with it, just all the accessories are pain to EDC on person.

Add the LM bit extender and you open this tools capability even further.

The extender will accept 1/4 in bits if you require something other than the flat LM bits.  It also allows me to use sockets and my ratcheting thing I made.  Now sure the sockets combined with this tool aren't gonna break loose high torque fastened or rusted bolts but it's pretty good.

I can carry 9 most often used sockets and LM bits along with some 1/4 bits in a decently sized package.  Tool box is an understatement.

The bit extender will take regular 1/4 bits? I did not know that.

I really got to stop putting off getting one and some bit cards.

ALL STANDARD 1/4 HEX BITS  :tu:

This one piece of kit really extends the LM line capacity that uses the bit driver.  I never understand when folks say the flat LM bit are an issue when this extender solves the problem by accepting 1/4 bits.
