Favorite non SAK pocket knife?
on: November 23, 2014, 06:04:24 PM
We humans are a strange lot. Complex and often convoluted, we sometimes have trouble even knowing what we like ourselves. Like knives. I guess knives are like whiskey, ice cream, and cigars, there are so many types and not all of them are to our individual taste.

I've always liked the traditional style of pocketknives, maybe because it's what I grew up with in the boom years after WW2. Or maybe I just like the warmth of the natural materials. I do know that I love having a choice of blades to pick from depending on what I'm doing. I've had a lot of knives in my life, and most of them are long gone now. Sold off, given away, some just tossed. Very few of them are missed. I regret letting myself be talked out of a nice little Boker 240 with rosewood scales. I sometimes miss the stag handle Puma stockman that was stolen out of my cars glove box when it was towed away after an accident  and I was on the way to the hospital.

But life goes in a circle, and now I have a knife that I love more than any that I love in the recent past. Several months ago, I was gifted a Northwoods stockman with zebra wood scales. The carbon steel blades have developed a nice patina, and the scales have a nice smooth feel after a lot of polishing with a linseed oiled cloth. Aside from my favorite couple of SAK's, I could get rid of all my other pocket knives and finish up this life with just this knife and my alox SAK. When my hand closes around the knife, it feels so damm good and natural in my hand.

I've been downsizing a great deal of late. I'm a retired old fart on social security, and my time is now spent fishing, woods rambling with my better half of over 4 decades, and some canoeing. How much do I need in the way of life?

This is a keeper.

Not gonna lie, I'm not much into the classic style. But I understand what you mean and sometimes its hard to put it in words why this is your perfect choice.

I found mine a while ago and while I from time to time look over the fence, it seems that not one comes close.
The One
When I wrote that, I didn't care for the pocket clip, now I would miss it. Time changes everything, but for now, there is only ONE for me :D
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Yeah, the cult of the peanut has spread like hot butter on a piece of bread. No complaints.

Mine is a bigger version of the Peanut, a Case Texas Jack:

Just got this from my wife, but I've carried other Case knives in the past, and expect to get along quite well with this one :)

I've a number of knives i like a whole lot, most "traditional". An amber bone Case stockman with a pen blade in place of the spey. A yellow Case trapper. No. 8 and 9 Opinels, GEC 25 with buffalo horn scales and a main spear blade, secondary clip. A few others. But, the one that seems to finds it way into my pocket most often is a Buck 303.  It's the knife that is comfortBle enough in both hand and pocket that i dont mind getting dirty. It probably doesn't hurt that i have a backup that i accidentally bought thanks to a glitch with Amazon. It ain't pretty, there are a million like it, but it's mine and it hasn't let me down yet.

@eddie - the Texas Jack is a great little knife for sure.  :tu:

Personally when it comes to slipjoints, my favorite is a Case 3207CV, the yellow-handled mini Trapper in CV steel.  I just love that knife.

Ahh, the peanut, how do i  love thee…

If it weren't for age and the arthritis in my hands from 30 years of cranking on mills and pulling lathe handles, I'd still have my 'nut. But at least I still see it once in a while when I meet up with the friend who gifted me the Northwoods stockman that he had modded for a lighter spring pull. Only after a few months of use, did I realize that this knife had actually been made for me and my particular problems. THAT is a real friend!

But I'm very glad that you and jacktrades enjoy them!!! They are great little knives that can most of what we need a pocket knife for.

I'm fond of stockman pattern knives. I've a neat little Rough Rider Peanut,a Warnie Taylors Eye Whitness. Generally I like the classic styles, but I'm thinking the Spydie Squeak could worm it's way into my affections
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Hmmm .....

Byrd Tern
Byrd Wings Slipit
CRKT Mah Liong #5
Case Barlow
A Wright Buffalo Senator
J Rodgers Campers Knife
Case Seahorse Whittler

Too many favourites to pick just one, but if pressed I'd prob say Byrd Tern for modern clipped folder, and Arthur Wright Buffalo Senator for traditional slippie ... and then maybe change my mind the following day  :D
