Whose jaws open the widest?   

• Supertool 300?
• Wave?
• PST?

The Supertool right? As it is a big brute of a Leatherman?? And a member of the 4.5” family.
Hmmm - Maybe not ... Read on....

So I needed to undo one of those large knurled rings with a reverse thread that you get on barbecue gas bottles.
It was very tightly screwed on - so I got my PST to assist, as it was my nearest MT. The jaws did not quite fit over the ring – so I thought:
"The Supertool will fix it"…. And proceeded to get that….
Well it did not  – I ended up using a large adjustable wrench.

The experience got me wondering about how wide the jaws opened
- So I got out the above three tools and compared them one to another to see whose jaws opened wider.....
The results were quite surprising.

So what was the sequence from smallest to widest y’all ?? Any guesses??

My guess will be the Wave.

I think the Crunch would be a better choice, according to Leatherman the jaw can clamp up to a 25mm diameter pipe. This is the reason I carry it on my motorcycle.

I think the Schrade/ViseGrip Toolbox 6LC locking pliers might be hard to beat in MTs - I just measured one of mine and it can lock onto something 46mm in diameter !!!

My Lords, Ladies, Gentlemen and fellow MT nutcases ......... Drum roll ......... The results

• In the first picture we see the PST vs the Wave ......... Winner = Wave
• In the second picture we see the PST vs Supertool 300 ......... Winner = PST

I therefore declare the final results to be:

• Wave
• PST
• Supertool 300

I was very surprised - Well done pietervn - You predicted correctly
I have told my Supertool 300 to grow a bit if he really wants to be one of the Big Bad Boys 
Although as you can see there is not a lot in it at all 
Also how you positioned the pliers made quite a difference to how the gap looked - I hope it is clear!

And yesterday I was very thrilled to receive a Swisstool - Original version
So threw him into the ring against the looser - And another surprise he lost -

PS. In spite of this I just love the Swisstool - I think it's going to be my favourite.

One quick PS on this:

I was looking at the photos and wondered about the curved gripping area - which I guess is what is important.
Just did a rough visual test on the tools themselves and the results here are:

• Wave/Supertool tie for first place
• Swisstool/PST tie for second place
