Show us your toybox
on: November 28, 2014, 03:04:23 PM
Inspired by Eddie1115's post about his new tool toybox, here's mine.

It's an old Moore and Wright machinist's chest, bought off ebay in a bit of a sorry state.  Some new runners, repairs to a few of the drawers, new felt liners and some elbow grease and it's a nice place to keep my collection.

Chargers, batteries, sheaths and wallets in the bottom

Multis:

SAKs and other knives:

Cables and lights:

Clips, small parts, spare lanyards and rings, and odds and ends; notebooks:

The lot:

I almost started this thread earlier, but figured I'd wait for record-breaking Friday.  :)

Here is mine.  A Harbor Freight clone of a Gerstner machinist chest.  I figure I'll roll with the cheaper one until it starts wearing out (or until I need more space ;) ), then I'll upgrade to the real thing.  I do like the idea of restoring an old box (:tu: looks great hiraethus ).  I even like the idea of building something like this if I suddenly come into a ton of free time ;)

The top has spare parts, boxes, and a couple NIB items that I haven't decided what to do with yet:

Slipjoints and Alox:

SAKs:

Small LMs and more SAKs:

LMs that get frequent use, with some folders:

Collection/less frequently used LMs in their sheaths:

I don't have much, most of them fit in one shallow drawer and the rest in my Skinth. I only keep users and tools I want to be inherited by my two children.

Mine are in a toolbox, but Im really not happy with that system.  I want something wall mounted with sliding glass doors, and little shelves to pose them on.  Put that in my man cave / rec room area and I'd be very happy.    :tu:  That way I can show them to people easily but still have them locked up so little fingers cant get at them.

I like the idea of a wood box or something nicer to put them in too though.

on eBay they sell these hanging wooden train display cases that would be perfect for multi-tool display. You can get them in HO, or N scale. I have an HO hanging on the wall. I would think the N scale might be a little better for smaller objects. All you might need is to buy some bead trip to prop the tools up. There is a small wooden lip that should work nicely to hold your MTs.

Just an idea.

The LM Squirt is the tool that brought me to MTO actually. Course once I got here things snowballed and come to think of it I never actually got the Squirt.

Still think it would be a perfect light duty pliers based tool for when you can't of don't want to carry Little Boy or a Wave.

Might be time for a new LM.

Yep, my plier uses, more often than not, fall into the "light duty" category, and the Squirt pliers punch above their weight, I think.  Sounds like another entry on the "need" list :pok:

Very nice, I always think wood works well with personal collections.

Those machinest boxes were what I wanted a few years back, problem I now have is I'd need too many!

All mine are just stored in 3 big stacked containers and 16 cardboard boxes! - can't think of a practical solution without turning the house into a mini museum.  :ahhh

Next year I'm (hopefully) going to build something in the loft to store them and all the other "toys" I've amassed.
