Hello from Shropshire, England.
on: December 02, 2014, 12:11:04 PM
Hello,
New to forum. Found as I have now spent days, probably weeks researching a multi tool for my wife to buy me for Christmas. I think I have narrowed it down to either a Leatherman OHT or the Gerber Bullrush. Leaning towards the Leatherman as it seems a bit more solid and the pouch looks as if it will attach to my work uniform nicely, whereas from the look of it, the Gerber pouch would not. Any thoughts appreciated or other suggestions.
Anyway, I'm Chris, from Shropshire, England UK. Are there many UK members? Would be handy for sales/trades etc as it's very difficult picking up anything second hand over here.

Hello! Welcome to MTO!
The OHT is a nice tool. Everything is one handed opening and locks.

Welcome.

LM sounds like a good choise.

There are several UK members around.

Welcome to the forums. I would go with the Leatherman over the Bullrush. I have both, and much prefer the Leatherman myself.

I can also easily suggest a Surge for a nice heavy duty work multi-tool.
A little Leatherman information.

Hi and welcome, think I'm the first of the Brits to make it here

OHT is a good tool, but in the same price range you also have the Wave and ST300,offering far higher tool density. Personally I'd avoid the Bullrush though
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Both the Bullrush and the OHT (even considered the cheaper Gerber Crucial in black) are pretty much what I'm looking for, just not sure about quality etc. it will be used for work, worn on a stab vest in my role in local policing here in the UK, just for any day to do jobs I may come across, nothing major. The strap cutter is a nice feature, though in reality would probably never be used, but nice to have. You never know...
From what I can see the OHT molle pouch would fit nicely on the vest, the Gerber doesn't look like it would. No need for bottle openers etc etc.

Hello from Switzerland

The two seem an odd comparison to me. Anyway, I have a lazy Wave, so if you consider that I will make you a good price* (just to get you started on the addiction).
One handed opening: Wave (personally, I prefer the Charge, but its way more expensive just for a bit more design). But isn't OHO + locking illegal in the UK?
Not one-handed opening: SwissTool Spirit (you can't go wrong with that one)

*What would be a good price
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Hello, and thanks, really appreciate the offer but not got much spare cash at the moment (unless it's a crazy bargain price) with Christmas coming up and the OHT/Bullrush will be a present from the wife. The Wave does look good though and would be good for at home etc...
As for OHO/ locking in the UK, legal as long as you have a valid reason for being in possession so for me would be using at work, for the police, so should be ok
I can see all this becoming a bit addictive. Picked up a Gerber Dime Black for the key chain the other day to get me started...

Hi and welcome.

The Dime is a good choice as a first buy, the best thing about it is it will make whatever you buy next look good.
:sarcasm:
It's not my favorite tool.

Greetings, I recently got the OHT and while very neat tool I would suggest Wave, Rebar, Surge.  if whats your main concern is attaching it to your vest you can get the LM Molle sheath for these as well.

The OHT is pretty terrific but has a limited tool set and they're stubby as well.

Good luck

Yup  :tu:
Stick around for a bit and you might get to meet us, we tend to get together for a weekend every now and then (because we're sad like that!).

What do you actually want the tool for? If you want something small and light that you forget about until you need it, you've got very different needs to someone that's constantly using a tool.

TBH I find the OHT a bit bulky. I don't own one but have played with one and it wasn't for me. My favourite standard tool is the Rebar because it's simple, relatively cheap and light and has a good bit of everything in it. It's not a tool you can use on impulse like the OHT but it does work well.

Still, it's nice to have a policeman that knows what an MT is  :tu:

From what you've said the Rebar does sound like a good choice - good tool choice, robust, compact and not as expensive as some others.  Unless you are going to be using it very frequently the lack of OHO blades won't be much of a factor.

Thanks all, seems like a really friendly place.
As mentioned earlier I really want a solid good quality tool, don't need many tool options, just the basic stuff but I do want a quality feel to it and to do the few jobs it does well, and to be built to last etc. The seatbelt/strap cutter is a feature I would like to have too really, which is why I was looking at the two mentioned. Though the black crucial has this too I believe? It also helps that I really like the way these three look, sad I know. Great to have all the other recommendations as its giving me a lot to look and research on my iPad. Also will help when choosing another MT some time soon for home/personal use.

If you can do without the pliers....may I suggest a Victorinox Rescue Tool. A great 111mm knife that can do great things when you may have to rescue someone in a vehicle. One never knows...especially in your line of work.
