Bike Riders...What do you use for a Bike Bag?
on: December 04, 2014, 09:33:12 PM

I have a tank bag and a smaller saddle bag on my bike. I'd like to go down to one single larger one. What does everyone use for a bike bag?
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Personally I like to carry a camelback. Even if I don't use the bladder they're nice and small and don't shift around at all when riding. But I usually have a saddlebag as well. I know there are well made frame packs that attach to the top and down tubes if that's what you're looking for.

I put a maxpedition 10x4 bottle holder under my seat for a small tool kit and a drink.

Mentioning a Tank bag, I guess you are talking about a Motorbike, not a bicycle?

I always use a tank bag and a back pack, but many riders i own use a watrerproof duffle on the pillion seat.

Tank bag and a Pelican 1550 for a top box (with quick release so it doubles as a briefcase) are always on my bike. Soft bags are added when I need more storage space, such as a weekend at the cottage. A dry bag is strapped on top of the Pelican when moto camping.

I tend to travel heavy, with my tank bag mostly full of tools, but I am never left wanting. I lost count of the number of other riders I've been able to help when they broke down. A hydration bladder and snacks also go in the tank bag when required. I get trying to travel light, especially those riding in a city, but much of my riding is rural, and often at night on lonely roads...

What ever you do, try to keep the load balanced, low, and between the axles.

What does everyone think about one of the small Ortleib dry bags strapped to the back of the seat with a couple straps?

Nothing wrong with that. Just be sure to remove as much air from the bag as possible when closing it up. Sharp corners and other pointy things should be avoided or well protected so the bag doesn't get damaged.

When me and the wife go biking, we just use backpacks.  I think they are Jansport's or something similiar!  I am considering changing to more of a shoulder carry/messenger type bag of some sorts but not sure what yet!  I would need to find an inexpensive one though!

I wish I could get use to one small one that fits on a bike but I am always worried someone will steal it when the bikes are parked as we like to walk around too!

Panniers on my bike for tools/pump and other larger and/or heavier items. For personal/small stuff a Timbuk2 small custom messenger. I prefer the dynamic of a messenger bag to a backpack by far.

My wife and I ride road bikes. We ride for the cardiovascular benefits so we aren't riding for long periods of time.We do 20K 5 to 6 days a week which translates to one hour rides each day.So the need to carry anymore than emergency tools and flat repair kits aren't necessary.

We each carry a triangle seat bag with the aforementioned items.

Our bags are similar to this although not identical.

Anybody here ride with a rear rack? I might get a reasonably priced rack and get a drylok dry bag from alpkit and just strap it down.
