Getting ready to try my first mod.
on: December 09, 2014, 11:59:36 PM
I just won a Compact and a Spartan Lite on ebay. I plan to remove the opener layer from the Spartan Lite and replace its small blade with the combo tool from the Compact. Then I plan to use the plus scales from the Compact on the new "Illuminated Scientist" ( not my name )... With any luck, I'll be able to re-assemble the Compact as a Spartan. I'm excited!!

If you're careful when you drill the heads off the pins you should be able to use the pins again for your Illuminated Scientist.

What are you going to do with the scissors? Climber > Spartan. :tu:

That's what I'm hoping! I don't have any brass rod stock, so I'm hoping to be able to reuse the pins.

Well... Unfortunately, I won't be able to use them right away. I'm not even certain I'll be able to turn the Compact into a Spartan... Hopefully the pins will still be long enough for that. If not, I guess I'll have to order some brass rods. If I *CAN* assemble it back into a Spartan, I guess I'll have a spare pair of scissors.... If not, I'll try to get some brass rods and make a climber. My primary goal is getting this Illuminated Scientist Plus built.

Know anybody that needs a scissors layer? LOL

Is that for me to keep track of what I'm doing? Or for me to document what I'm doing for a post here? :)

:salute: Good luck sambeaux, it's a wild ride and will change the way you look at SAK's. Everything will be moddable.

+1 This messed me up for a while.  I started buying random various SAKs on ebay, that I had no intention of carrying/using.  I only saw them as parts.  I've leveled out since then, back to what people here might consider "normal". Now only some of the SAKs I buy are for parts. ;)

I may have a problem then.

The first SAk I bought was with the intention to tear down for its parts. An Explorer.

I guess I'm not very creative... I've been thinking about modding a SAK for a while now, I just never came up with a decent mod until recently. The pseudo scientist or Illuminated Scientist is the first thing I've come across that really seems worthwhile and doesn't require cad/cam to pull off. LOL

Thanks! I'm excited and a little nervous. Neither the Compact nor the Spartan Lite has shipped yet. It looks like one or both might be missing the mini screwdriver. :( I'm hoping to have them both in hand in a week.
I will keep you guys up to date. :)

That's beautiful. :) I will be drilling with a 7/64" bit, correct? I want to reuse the pins, so I plan to go very slow. Any gotchas I need to know about?

I just drill a little then test "carefully " to see if the collar was loose enough to come off. Make sure to sand any burrs after drilling. Good luck, it's easy.

Spartan Lite has shipped! First class mail from Virginia... I'm guessing 3-4 days?
Still waiting to hear about the compact.

In Moscow the package from the USA, I get at best 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer. Strange but Priority Mail is on a level with First Class mail..

Ebay tells me that the expected delivery date is the 14th. I think that's incredibly optimistic for two reasons... The knives didn't ship until 48 hours after I won the bid... and the postal service doesn't deliver on Sundays... I kinda doubt the knives will come in today, but I'm still hopeful.

For some reason, the ebay app has been reminding me EVERY DAY that my items have been paid for AND marked as shipped. Some days, it reminds me 2-3 times a day. I'm not sure how to acknowledge it or tell it to shut up.

Oh well, it should be here soon.

Sam

P.S. I'm sure this has been covered many, many times... but where's a good place to order brass rod? I want to use the leftover parts to build a climber, I think.

Won't the shipping be pretty high for shipping to the US?
