Best LM for someone who doesn't want one
on: December 18, 2014, 04:48:51 PM
Hi guys,

Trying to inspire my girlfriend of almost 2 years that she needs an MT to at least keep in her car or purse or SOMETHING. Her excuse is that she'll always be with me if she ever needs one. I'm not buying it. I need some advice on an attractive looking LM that's on the easier to use side. (bonus if it's pink). It can be retired (the easier to find ones). If you'd like to recommend other brands that's fine as well (Open to SAKs as well). Something convincing that isn't ugly. Current plan is Style CS in the BCA pink. Thanks!

I've given my wife a few SAKs and a MT over the years, I'll ask her what it is she gets most use out of. :)

The most used and most versatile Leatherman I own is the leatherman Style.

The Vic Classic has lots of variants, flags, artwork, plain colours...

OK, I asked the question.  Apparently the one she carries the most is a simple Leatherman Style.  It's even available in pink I believe. :)

I would recommend a Micra. Mrs. TJ steals mine sometimes. Much more utility than a Style or a Classic sd.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

my wife has a Juice CS4, a Squirt P4, and a Style CS, but the one she gets the most use out of (by far) is the Squirt... because it's the one she decided to keep in her purse. ;)

she kept the Juice in there for awhile, but decided it was too big/heavy. she tried the CS for awhile, but decided she preferred the pliers of the P4. she even admits that it has come in handy more often than she thought it would.

Style CS, or Vic Classic.

The Vic Classic has many more options for looks, has a toothpick, and is much more compact.

The Style CS has much beefier scissors, caplifter/carabener, and generally looks more 'modern'.

Both are great.

The Classic will scuff and mar very easily. I haven't noticed any wear on the plastic portion on any of my Styles.

You might also want to consider the pink Micra. More tools than the Style CS, but the finish will scratch off. The plain stainless Micra could be an option, and looks essentially 'timeless' because of that stainless finish.

On my wifes keys: A Freestyle.

Pliers and a blade is all she needs, she says.

I would agree with most of what's been said so far, Vic Classic, LM Style or Style CS.

And I'll add one, the Wenger Swiss Clipper.  They have red, purple, and pink, as well as versions with or without a blade.  Not quite as easy to find these days, but they're still out there for sale.

My wife shrugged off most SAKs or MTs I'd suggested, but when I gave her a purple Swiss Clipper, she clipped it into her purse, and it's still there, months later.

I gave my BFF, who is a totally NOT MTO type of girl, a red Micra and she's been using it quite a lot, actually. She isn't a... MT fan, so don't raise your hopes too much :D But she finds it useful and it's cool to see her use it :D

My missus carries a LM Squirt P4 in her handbag.  These are available in pink, but you might have to search eBay for a while to find one in decent condition.  These are small, light, and non-dangerous looking, but still have reasonabale pliers for their size.

I'd go with the LM Squirt, though my other half is not an MT fan so i got her a victorinox classic SD for Christmas, just so she has *something* handy when she needs it.

Yep, I think there's quite a lot to be said for a Squirt.

My Style CS gets curious/admiring looks from non tool people. They usually comment that it looks cool and are surprised how many tools it has.

I think that... most ladies will shudder at the thought of carrying PLIERS no matter how tiny they are :D So maybe you first start with something knife/scissors based and then move to...Squirt or whatever :D

A Vic Classic has most acceptance probabilities. But for a Leatherman, instead of a Squirt you might give her a Juice with scissors. Yes, Spirit is much better but, if she isn't going to use it anyway the form factor of Juice is female bag friendly and she might like the color. What I gave to the females of my life.
Spouse: Classic (used for a couple of years and then forgotten) and a Cybertool 34 (used like hell, beaten up in fact by my wife and daughter who borrowed it many times, mostly for jewelry making and fixing).
Daughter: Pink Cadet (used at her house) and a Vic Classic with the black and white scales with lettering that I will give her on Xmas (she is still cutting her nails with her teeth, I hope she might stop that after that, I'll make her promise ilon new year's eve).
