I read (about 5 years ago) that there are only 35 people left that exclusively speak Rumantsch. Nowadays we just keep it alive for the bragging and tradition

Schweizerdeutsch is almost it's own language, but I hate to see homogenization killing off native languages.I studied German extensively in college, with the plan to go to Germany as an exchange student my senior year. Life took different turns and I didn't get to Europe until 2005 but I was amazed how little I could read/understand in the rural parts of Switzerland. My wife, daughter and I did a balloon ride from Chateau d'Oex and I asked the balloonist (a native Parisian ) if the Swiss spoke French differently than in France. He said, "No, but I cannot understand their colloquial German".
