Hello from France!
on: December 20, 2014, 05:08:25 PM
Hello, I'm a newcomer after a lot of lurking.
I have a small multitool collection, mostly leatherman: charge tti, surge, style ps, squirt ps4,
and other brand : a spirit X, counterfait old wave and cheap multitools.

Seriously, no-one speaks it anymore. I read (about 5 years ago) that there are only 35 people left that exclusively speak Rumantsch. Nowadays we just keep it alive for the bragging and tradition

Wow, I am sorry to hear that.  :(  Schweizerdeutsch is almost it's own language, but I hate to see homogenization killing off native languages.

I studied German extensively in college, with the plan to go to Germany as an exchange student my senior year.  Life took different turns and I didn't get to Europe until 2005 but I was amazed how little I could read/understand in the rural parts of Switzerland. My wife, daughter and I did a balloon ride from Chateau d'Oex and I asked the balloonist (a native Parisian ) if the Swiss spoke French differently than in France.  He said, "No, but I cannot understand their colloquial German".

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

Its kind of funny, because we all talk different, pronounce stuff different and use different words, we are used to not understand each other on a word by word base but on sentences. Which makes it much easier for us to understand someone from Scotland or Japan, speaking English.
We are also easier to understand because we speak slower :D. This is actually quite a phenomenon. If I go to Spain or France or Russia (all languages I don't speak well) people cannot adjust to that (make easier sentences, speak slower). On the other hand, if we realize that someone does not understand us well, we start speaking slower and use easier words. Its why Swiss people are so easy to understand no matter what language we speak.
