Kampfer's PLSK (Pliersless Sidekick)
on: December 23, 2014, 12:36:45 AM
First I like to thank babola for giving me the inspiration.
After a whole week of tinkering and three prototypes later, now the PLSK (Pliersless Sidekick) project is completed.
The finished product weights at 3.3 oz, with 10 tools. Implements at both ends of the tool now click in nicely with authority, each implement takes at least three lbs of force to disengage from clicked position, that is more than any Victorinox I measured. Drivers fold out and click at the correct angle, as they were 15* off on early prototypes, and I might add a 90* stop to them in the future. I also converted the serrated blade to an awl fashioned after Victorinox Alox’s awl.

Few more photos:
It is a handy little tool, carrys well in pocket with clip.
The medium flat head driver has been thinned out a bit for better fit.

Thanks, I can not take much credit. It was actually a very simple mod to do, Majority of the work was filing down the drivers for them to click in correctly.

Disregarding the not so useful file and stupid ruler, Sidekick Lite has similar tool set as Victorinox Pioneer, but with OHO locking blade, larger stronger implements and pocket clip.

And what would that cost, in order to compare with the Vic?

That depends on where you live, I guess. In Germany a Wingman/Sidekick will cost roughly 40-60 € (w. pouch and Carabiner), which is more than say a Farmer which costs around 34,- € or let´s take the 111 slidelock Adventurer with similar tools for 31,-€.

Anyways, I do like the mod and think I might harm an unsuspecting Sidekick, soon.

Then it costs more, but if you already have one or if you get it for 18$ in the US it is a good option.

I've bought all my Wingmen and Sidekicks for £15-20 (all second hand, some as new or in packet), and a Farmer costs £20-25 new.

I have a set of needle files though, what kind of tool is needed for the pivots?
The only tools you will need would be two T10 bits for taking the tool apart and putting back together, then a large hand file for re profiling the drivers. Converting SE blade would require a grinder.

I could prolly borrow a file from the contract auto repair people.

Didn't you say something about needing to add some washers?

I have a CT 41 on the way will have to see if it has T10 bits.

Need someone to hit up Home Depot and the post office for me.

The washers are needed for wave blade installation, as sidekick lite only contains parts from sidekick, they are not needed.

I can hook you up with a sidekick and T10 bits for you.

The mod will only took me a couple hours to complete. Everything done by hand except the awl, I needed a grinder and sharpening stone.

Ok so I checked. The CT 41 comes with a T10 bit so I would just have to score a T 10 driver from you or if they are more then a buck or two try and borrow one here.

No need for washers makes this something that would be cool to try myself.

Did you end up leaving the riveted tensioner in or did you remove it ?

The handle and its pliers tension spring remain un-touched.
I filed down the drivers to fit. They click in and take at least 3 lbs of force to disengage from clicked position.

Looks brilliant!
Is the handle comfortable to use with all the tools? The thinner end looks like it has a slightly up-swept tail to it.
Regards, Jon.

Yeah?

Different handle shape made from different stuff and a thicker blade on the Sidekick Lite. Would not think what you said is the case.

Not really qualified to say seeing as I do not have my SKL yet and have always agreed with you before so what do I know.

I was referring to their similarity in size and weight. Sure they are made of different material and handle shape are also different. Sidekick blade isn't as thick as skeletool, a bit thinner than wave's

That is good then, I like the Waves blade. Good slicer.

Just don't slice anything moist, those blades like to show their high carbon side, not their stainless side

I like this mod  8). Sidekick Lite, however, makes it sound like it has a small bulb in there, ala victorinox signature lite.  I'd probably call it the Sidekick OST (One Side Tool) of I made one. The original was the One Side Sidekick? Presumably OST could fit any model chosen to use a single handle as the base.

The acurate name would be Pliers Less Sidekick, PLSK.
