Yes, the canoe has finally gotten wet. :D  Took it down to the local Loch and spent a couple of hours getting to know the new boat.

This was actually taken after about an hour on the water, but I decided to stop as smoking and inflatable boats don't go together. ;)

Here's one just to prove it did more than sit on the shoreline.

See that grey blob in the middle on the shot?  Well that's a heron.  Honest.

All-in-all it went very well.  My somewhat rusty J-stroke paddling went well and the canoe actually keeps a pretty straight line, not nearly as wayward as I might have expected.  She does need a bit of work if you're trying to paddle with the wind coming in from the beam, she's quite the wind catcher, but honestly nothing ridiculous.  Much happier with her nose to the wind or, even better, getting a nice draft up the tail.  :)

Here's one my wife took as she said her fond, and slightly worried, farewell.  :D

Might have been for identification purposes as well. ;)

Last one.  A slightly better view down the loch.  Nice and calm when I first got in the water, but got a good bit choppier later on.

Hows the boat "handle" atop your car?  It looks like a lot of fun Gareth albeit cold out there.

That looks like a great time!  All of the waterways here are covered in ice right now so no chance of boating here at the moment.  I'm very jealous!

Ahhhh .... I though it was one you inflated when you got there ... or do you not have a 12V pump? Looks like a fun outing anyway  :tu: Hopefully those crosswinds won't be as bad once you have a second person on board.

Never stopped me on my boat. I find it acts as a very good incentive to not fall in

Very much my philosophy when walking or cycling along canal towpaths

That's what life jackets are for.  My brother can't swim either but you are hard pressed to get him out of a kayak.

Cheers all. :)

Al, it does indeed fit in the car if it's uninflated, but give that I'd already pumped it up and that the loch is only a 5 minute drive from my house it seemed easier just to stick it on top of the car.  Blowing the thing up is actually very quick, not much more than 5 minutes work I'd say even with a manual pump.  On the other hand packing it away is a right git, though I'll have to do it again before the big trip in a couple of weeks time.

Didn't seem to make much difference TBH, but I was only on roads with a 30 MPH speed limit.  Not sure I'd want to drive at 70 MPH with that on the roof.

We've had a break in the weather for the last few days or so that I took advantage of.  Snow expected again in the next couple of days. :-\

Same here, in fact that's one of the main reasons why I don't own a kayak yet, I can maybe swim like 15 meters, but once my momentum runs out I will be going down more than I will be going forward.  But I LOVE kayaking, I love being smack in the middle of these beautiful sceneries ...  :dd:

Great pics Gareth, I hope there will be a lot more to come of those (and I'm also curious to see a long term test of your kayak, because I'm still thinking of getting me one of those  ;)).

I'd always suggest a buoyancy aid/life jacket anyway.  Not many people who can swim have done so in cold water, with clothes and shoes on.  I had to deliberately capsize and make a swim to shore (bringing kayak and paddle with me) as part of a training course I did as a kid.  The concept of "swimming" kind of goes out the window.  Educational it was, fun it wasn't. ;)
