I treated myself to a Hultafors Agdor Forrest axe and there is some splitting at the head of the axe

I'd still use it

It looks like it's just chipping along the outside edge

That's from the round wedge pushing the wood out to make the for a more secure fit. You don't usually see it cause most axes have a flush fitting.
