One of the worst things about cycling after dark is your not being very visable side on

That's a cool idea.I've also thought laying my hands on some Scotchlite to cut into strips and applying to a couple bikes

A strobe light is also a good idea for night riding. Nothing catches the eye light a flashing light (or a naked lady!).

The down low glow looks like a great idea. It is a shame they can't execute the design for less than $140!

couldn't you get some of those snap glow lights like they use in the military and velcro to your bike? I've seen the 8 hour glow sticks at Lowes for a couple of bucks.
