Microscope Light
on: January 17, 2015, 02:22:40 PM
I am not into torches, I just use my iPhone's LED, my dimmed red astronomy lights and occassionally my MiniMagLite LED. But now I bought a microscope with LED lighting which is better than halogen or tungsten lighting because it is cool and it doesn't require a wall socket, so I can take the microscope wherever I play work. But the LEDs are single, one up and one under, so for some appilcations it isn't bright enough. I used my MiniMagLite LED as an additional focusing source and the results were great, but I have to keep it in my hand. So I'm thinking about a standing dimmable battery operated light with much positional freedom, to light specimens from various angles providing controlled contrast. Pros use expensive fibre optics lightsm socket mounted, but I want something cheap.
That's what I found so far, the Gorilla Torch http://joby.com/gorillatorch

What's your opinion? Are there other options?

Some reviews said that the light dies easily. So I think of buying just the Gorilla tripod (14 euros) and put on it a light. So, are there good lights with photo screw (1/4-20 UNC)?

I'm no help. Whenever I've needed light like that, I attached a headlamp to one of my photo tripods by wrapping the headband around the tripod head.

As far as a light goes that has a 1/4- 20, I would try looking for mountable dive lights, or hard hat lights!

I was thinking you could use one of these;

Combined with one of these; (use this to hold a light)

This you would have a Gorilla Tripod-GoPro Tripod Adapter- GoPro Handle Bar Mount - flashlight

The tripod adapter and handle bar mount don't have to be gopro brand. There are thousands of knockoffs and you should be able to score both for less than 10 bucks on ebay.

I just 47 malstorm x10 held in hand, but mine is a slide microscope. If you have a dissection microscope as pictured it might be easier to get one of those bike handle bar mount and rig it to a tripod.

Better yet, something like a camera ring flash around the objective lense, I think those can stay on at a reduced brightness.

I found a simpler solution for just 7€. It is called HQ Torch L801, with 8 LEDs and runs on 3AAA batteries. It is the right size and with a very flexible neck. It is brighter than the built in LED and provides contrast that can be fine tuned by changing the angle and direction of light.
