Solarforce light, running on a pair of RCR123 rechargeables. Don't recognise the battery brand.

You got to be careful with cr123s.

Always leave a light open when not in use. The do produce gas. If you don't believe this leave one sealed up a week then open it and smell it.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Interesting.

My lights are always closed up tight, and I don't recall one ever exploding.  That seems like one of those things I'd remember.

Very true. This applies to all lithium batteries, regardless of whether they are primaries or rechargeables.

I guess that's a strong argument for metal tube.  Less shrapnel than a plastic battery tube.

I'm guessing the heat and fumes did the most damage.

And I agree with Joel on this one. He did it to himself. EVERY SITE that sells Li-ion cells and every flashlight seller has a disclamer on using batteries and that you should ALWAYS use batteries by the same brand, same charge, never with different charge levels. Otherwise this happens.

But some people don't read those or think "That will never happen to me."

That's why I used CR123X1 lights or else I use a 18650 cell.  I don't like things going boom when I don't know they're gonna go boom. :D :ahhh
