My First SlingShot Build!
on: January 20, 2015, 04:14:17 AM
So my new years resolution is to kill a squirrel with a slingshot.

I've done almost everything else, noose, longbow, compound, trap, deadfall, and of course every assortment of pistol/rifle/Shotgun. Including a City-Legal Air Powered .22 Shotgun.

I had many options to choose from, wood, metal, or synthetic. Should I buy one? Or should I make one?

Anyways I chose to make one, and the only cost should be some elastic band or tube.

This is the base, made with some scrap steel I had.

I will make a wood handle that will slide up from the bottom.

I haven't decided if I'm going to paint it either?

Nice job, but I gotta ask, if you miss can you just throw the sling and hope to knock it out? it looks a little heavy, maybe by adding a wood to the handle will cover up some of the steel to take away the heavy look? But hey, so long as it does its job who cares what it looks like, that what I always say! :tu:

I probably could just throw it

I actually never considered weight. But it still feels good in my hand, I'm not the smallest of human shapes and size...

I'm way more concerned with the force of pulling back and how stable it will be. I think most my shots will have to muscle memory with just a quick pull and shoot. No aiming. I have to learn to know where I'll hit.

I did it with the longbow, I could draw and fire with my face away from the arrow and still get a 4" pattern at 25 yards....the slingshot though will be much tougher.

I always worried about the elastic coming off.. I don't know how good your, hand, wrist and arm are but they'll need some work! It's just like that bow, you pull back hard but the longer you wait the more your arms not going to like it!

It's a worry for me as well. I don't want what is essentially a giant rubber band hitting my eye.

I think the trick is to slide it on with soap then wait a day and hope it dries.

I will also be making a Groove in the metal, sliding the hose on, then wrapping it with something. I'm hoping the grooves will help it stay on.

Another little thing to do is get it on to where it turns down, then put a small hose clamp on, and like you said where you would put the clam make it rough..

That will probably be what I end up doing.

I just ordered a band and they recomend rubbing alcohol to get it on. This should be the only bought materal. Making the cost for whole project a whopping 7.77.

Hopefully I can carve a handle tomorrow, the band gets here on the 21st. (I love Amazon Prime)

Why not? ^^ would massive be better?

I'm gonna carve it down. I just can't decide on 1) which knife to use and 2) what shape to go with!

Few Build Deatails

bends were made by heating with a Mapp torch, indents were made with a dull railroad spike, then heating until it glows. At which point it was all hand bent with a vice to hold it. After every heat it got a quick gear oil dip to provide some coating. I did use a square to try to estimate the angles, but holding the torch and adjusting the vice and measuring on a square didn't work.

Hence the lack of build pictures :(

The rod is actually a little bigger than 1/4". I don't want to say exact until I can measure this afternoon then I'll let yall know.

The handle was a scrap peice of oak. I spent hours last night whittling it with my ZT and Skeletool. It has been sanded and is currently sitting in a zip-loc  full of silicone beads cut out of dry packs.

I did try to microwave it....the wood was fairly green and the microwave did seep quite a bit out the ends but I didn't want to risk it  catching on fire or it cracking.

More pics. The steel rod is 5/16".

I also used epoxy to start the gluing process.

Carved and sanded. There is still some hints of hand carved. (Skeletool)

I might leave it like this, then poly it.

Band should be here in about half an hour!!

those bands are hard hitting.  I have them on my old school trumark wristrocket.

NKlamerus, you must be a pretty strong fellow if you are pulling those back without a wristbrace

I think I'm just all around bigger than everyone thinks. I've been working out for 4 years now, my max bench is 360LBS...

I really like how strong these are. I do not like how short they are.

Doing really well. I try to spend an hour a day shooting. Atleast to get muscle memory down.

I haven't poly. or stained the handle. And I kinda like that it's getting stained as I use it!

I will have to get some photos some time soon

Depends on what your looking to build? It also may take awhile as I'm in and out town to alabama for the next few weeks!
