Coffee?
on: January 21, 2015, 01:55:15 AM
What does everyone use to make coffee?

I'm using a french press at home and want to do the samething for away from home, but couldn't find a plunger for my primus pots, seems MSR and GSI are the rage among local stores right now. GSI has a decent one but it's plastic and  it's kinda waste of space since I need a separate pot to boil water, plus I'm not comfortable with plastic and boiling water. Snow peak has a titanium one but I'm not going to drop $70 on a coffee press.

I use a Bunn coffee pot and when I am camping I just put the coffee in boiling water then just let the grounds settle.

A saucepan to boil the water and a 30 year old strainer basket sitting on top of an old orphaned carafe......

Works great! :tu:

At home I use a french press.  Hiking it's usually starbucks via packets and hot water, or DTT's method if I don't have any packets on hand.  If I'm camping for a few days in one place, I'll bring the same french press I use at home.

Are the VIA packets any good? I've been tempted, but I'm not sure

If you like dark starbucks coffee, I think those packets do a very good job.  I shared on my last trip and got the approval the rest of the group.

I'm not manly enough for cowboy coffee.  :D

I wonder if I can use those tea balls with coffee inside, not sure if the mesh will be fine enough.

Cafetiere or Moka pot at home, Nespresso at work, coffee bags if I'm going lightweight camping and an Aeropress or the Moka pot if I've got the car.

I'm not comfortable with plastic and boiling water.

You shouldn't be using boiling water to make coffee anyway.  It'll taste like you got it from Star*ucks if you do.

My EDC (Every Day Coffee!):
Aeropress with Able stainless steel filter.
Porlex mini coffee mill (fits inside Aeropress for travel).
Medium roast beans, ground fine.
0.5L hot water.
Timing device (the watch I'm wearing).
30 second inverted brewing method.

Typically 2 cups to get the day started. Often a third cup in an insulated and leak proof tumbler for the road. This kit is used at home, when traveling, on vacation, camping, etc. If I anticipate being away from home overnight, the kit goes with me.

I like good coffee, don't like paying for the crap that is served at most coffee shops, and despise dark roasts (reminds me of the stink of an ashtray). I'll drive past Tim Horton's, Starbucks, etc to get to McDonalds if I'm in need a coffee when on the road without my kit. Though that doesn't happen often.

I sold all the expensive coffee brewing equipment I had after 6 months of owning an Aeropress. It wasn't being used. I still have plenty of filters, presses, mocha pots, etc, collecting dust. I give them away when I can...
I EDC'd a SAK before MacGyver did...

A new Moulinex 12 cup coffee maker on the kitchen counter right now. Reusable filter. Works great and it's fast. It has a timer so we can load it the night before if necessary, plus it will automatically shut off so it won't burn a pot dry if it's forgotten. Generally my wife and I split one pot of coffee every day.

I've seen people using coffee filters and coffee grounds to make their own coffee "tea bags".

Take filter add desired amount of coffee and tie with kitchen string.  Heat water ( don't boil ) toss in coffee bag and let steep, voila.

I use a little one-cup brewer at home.

I get it from McDonalds or something when NOT at home.

I haven't gone hiking in ages, but if i did, I'd take tea bags.

I've heard good things about the Starbucks Via, but have never tried it because it's kind of crazy expensive, as is just buying coffee from Starbucks, and while i like coffee, I am NOT paying $4 a cup for it. I'd rather drink warm diet Mountain Dew.

I've done day hikes but no backpacking.

My husband is allergic to sleeping on anything other than a comfy bed.  ::)

EDIT: I said warm diet Mountain Dew because it's one of the most disgusting liquids I've ever consumed. I like regular MT. Dew just fine.

We get out when the weather is good as much as possible, but nothing over 6 mile day hikes. Meh, my knees are probably off for it anyway.

Since my wife doesn't drink coffee, a regular maker would be a waste. I get by with a French press on the weekends, and we have a free Starbucks machine at work. My palette isn't what anyone would call sophisticated, so I drink my coffee pretty indiscriminately. Usually like bolder roasts, but I'm not picky. Starbucks, Dunkin, Gevalia, Nescafe, whatever. My only requirement is that the coffee must be black, no sugar, no creamer,  no garbage.

I take my coffee with one sugar, unless it's some REALLY strong stuff, then two sugars. I do not dig cream in coffee, and find it worse in tea. Not powdered creamer, not real cream. Just don't dig it. An exception can be made on occasion for Irish Cream. :D

I also have to say, when I have sugar, I mean SUGAR, not artificial sweetener. I don't drink so much coffee that the 15 or so calories from the Sugar are going to make a difference. And ALSO when I say sugar, I don't mean that dirty brown  lumpy crap in the packets at froo-froo coffee joints. I mean plain white sugar.

I used to dump lots of sugar and cream into coffee, but since I started using a press, I've gradually converted to black only.

I have a Keurig.  I drink lots of flavored iced coffee all day long at work.  I particularly like Vanilla flavored coffees with lots of artifical sweetner. For my morning coffee I drink one cup of hot coffee with cream.

I just use a coffee filter and make a tea bag type thing. Hot water and add it to it just like tea. Works perfect.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?
