The Elgin

This is another of the old multis out there.  The Elgin was patented in the late 1800's.  There are multiple versions including a hard case set and a leather rolled set.  The sets have dies that fit in the hole in the handle. There are approximately 30 dies available.  The variations of the die sets means almost no one would buy an entire set. My tool does not hold dies.  Jaw replacements were 25 cents.  The price is printed on the jaw!

It's an adjustable wrench.

Thanks David! I've been wanting one for a while.  This one went cheap so it's mine.  There are at least 4 to 6 handle versions and at least 2 or 3 manufacturers.  Most of the versions with the die handles go for $30 or more.

What does it do?

Definitely an adjustable alligator style wrench, but some versions also have threading dies.

That is pretty cool.

Anything to do with the boat motor company?

Possible, but not likely.  The Elgin tool company was located in Illinois.  Elgin boats were sold by Sears Roebuck based in Chicago.  The Elgin tool was patented in 1896.  I believe the boat kits were sold in the 40's and 50's?

Another wonder hath appeared!

An Elgin with the leather tool pouch is up for auction on the popular online auction site. I've seen advertisements with this set, but this is the first set with orginal leather pouch that I have seen in the wild.  Looks like it was put in a box and never used.

What does an alligator wrench have in common with a holder for threading dies ?

What am I missing here?

No, I don't think you are missing anything.  The combination is unusual.  The tool isn't just a die holder. It is used to cut threads.

What part if this tool is used to cut threads,if it isn't the threading die held at the end of the tool?
