Amazing archery
on: January 24, 2015, 08:16:16 PM
This guy takes it to another level by practising like the REAL archers of old would have had to in battle. (i.e. firing 3 arrows in less than one second and hitting all 3 targets).

I'm not into archery but I think this is cool.

That was awesome!

Intersting too.  When I taught myself to shoot as a kid from fiberglass bows and homemade bows I always shot with the arrow on the right side.  Then I bought a proper fancy bow with the arrow rest on the left and it felt very weird to me and was the main reason I lost interest.

I'm somewhat lost for words, that's very impressive. :salute:  While I cannot even begin to dispute his incredible skill, I not quite so convinced that his evidence for right side shooting is quite so universal.  Looking at medieval European art is a very dubious way of gaining detail, lots of changes are made simply to keep the image easy to follow rather than a firm attempt to capture exactly how things looked or were done.  So while I have indeed seen images showing the arrow to the right of the bow, I've also seen images with the arrow to the left.  I'm not inclined to dismiss it as a hollywood myth myself.

+1
Medieval artists and weavers probably had no Idea how to use a bow and arrow. They usually just depicted stories told by others.
However, if I remember correctly, the arrow should rest on the right side of the bow when using the thumb grip or reverse grip . I think it has to do with wich side you release the string from. If you release it the conventional way with your palm against your face, then you should have the arrow on the left side. If you release it with your palm away from your face, you should have the arrow on the right side.
I might be wrong though.

Fast forward to about 1:30 and you'll see some other pretty impressive archery.  Not as fast as the opening video perhaps, but hardly what you'd call slow.

And much more reasonable than the funny running and hopping around from the first vid.

Reasonable not in a way that the first vid is a fake, but his thinking that his opinion is the way archery has to be done in ancient wars ..... probably to much consuming of Middleearth movies.  :D
Have fun.

I'd like to take a closer look at the nock on those arrows. Also at the string nock point. To achieve this speed they can't be using "regular" nocks, the opening is too narrow to consistently manage a good string "grip". A poorly nocked arrow could cause the string to break (or even the bow limbs).

I was wondering about that as well, they must be a lot more 'open' than any nock I am used to.

Maybe they're pulling on the arrow and not on the string. This would prevent "dry shooting" even if the nock isn't grabbing the string firmly.

ARGHHH!!!! I misspelled nock all the way in my last post! And now it's too late to edit it!!!!

Good read. :tu:  In a similar vein: https://www.facebook.com/notes/anna-maltese/yes-ive-seen-the-video-thank-you-for-posting-it-/10152769003622585?pnref=story

These two obviously know a lot about the subject, much much more than I do at any rate, and give we already had some issues with the claims made in the video I'm inclined to agree with them.  :)
