unexpected appreciation for the fish scaler tool
on: January 26, 2015, 12:57:31 AM
Up until recently, I didnt own a knife with a fish scaler.  I didnt expect to like it as much as I do.

Sometimes I like to open and close the tools on a vic to hear that theraputic snap and because it is somewhat medatative.  The Fish scaler tool is a nice blade to do this with because it wont accidentially give you a nasty cut.

It is also great to dig at pickles and jalepenos in a jar.  I think the ruler will be useful someday also.

From afar, I thought the fish scaler would be a waste of space.  I was wrong

I also use it to maneuver small wires in tight places (not electrical ones) and I have used it as a stylus on some touch screes (not phones) that some idiot decided could handle a qwerty keyboard even though it was only 60mm wide
If I can help, let me know

I specifically added the scaler to my custom knife when I ordered it.

At the time I worked on a card reader that would suck in a card and read it's magnetic strip, then write info back to it.  These were connected to machines and worked as vend system.  Really bad design as it required the machine to pull in and out and read a card that was usually kept in wallets, which of course bends and twists the cards.  Combine that with a machines that used three rubber wheels... ugh... just terrible.

Cards jammed in these things ALL the time.  To take it part enough to pull the card out with your hands literally required removing 17 screws and four bolts.  However, if you had a flat tool that was suitably long and suitably thin, you could remove just four screws and use this tool to push the card from the back just far enough to grab it with a pair if pliers and pull it out.

Even though I don't work on those machines any more (thank the lord!), I still find the fish scaler to be a GREAT poking tool.  :pok: The fact that it does not have a sharp point or a sharp edge means you can mess around in stuff without fear of slicing your fingers or wires or something else.

In that case you should try out the Richartz Picnic:

Warning: If you should plan on getting one, make sure you get an older, made in Germany one. They outsourced production to china and it seems they wanted to improve their profit by lowering quality...

It is a wonderful shiny thing for pointy, proddy, pokey tasks and I won't have a word said against it.

Who cares what it was designed for ?

Just for dig pickles from a jar, I may have to add the fish scaler to my ultimate wish list on a future custom alox.

"For the last 30 years or so, one side of the Victorinox scaler is
marked in inches (by eighths) and one side in centimeters (by halves). If
you can measure your fish with this, you must be a scientist. Very useful
though for such as, well, measuring small things."
This from The Swiss Army Knife Owner's Manual, which also describes how
to use the fish-scaler as a range finder.

The number of fries, corn dog bites, chicken nuggets, etc that I have stolen using the fish scaler as a fork is unmeasurable.  >:D

I have no idea why, but both my heels itch like mad sometimes.   The fish scaler is the perfect tool to scratch and dig in to my heels without worry.   So add heel scratcher to the list of uses.     :)
