Question about M1961/DAKs
on: January 26, 2015, 01:43:57 PM
The pair of DAKs I won EBay arrived this morning. The one with blade with the broken tip has been reprofiled, sharpened and cleaned, and is ready for use.

But here's the question( or at least the first one anyway). Although the scales have date stamps(KL87 and KL89 respectively) the blades don't have a date stamp like their Swiss counterparts. Does anyone know why?

The other question, just while I think of it,is that the liners spear to be brass...would that be right?

Sorry Kirk, I know the answers to all your questions (I don't really) but will only answer once you've provided photo's. Otherwise it never happened.

They look marvellous! The reprofiled blade looks good too.

My smiley deserves to be punched by your smiley. I just wanted to see pictures.

I'm rather happy with how the KL89 has come out. Urban carry M1961  >:D

The KL87 might be more interesting as the can open is mullered...but more of this later

I read that the blade date wasn't in the contract specs but the date is on the scales was.

DAKs never had year stamps on blade like soldiers. This is totally normal.

That would make a lot of sense, especially after looking at pics of that South African issue M1961 Dexter recently sold.

The KL89 feels less finished but more substantial to to 85 stamped Swiss M1961 TaxiDad gave me a while back

Pretty much everything that goes into the Swiss Army has the date stamp .... All the old leatherwork is the best as its stamped with the maker and the year

and the fork and spoon to go with your knife :)

It was the KL87s turn today. This old soldier had a damaged can opener, and had lost the snap in its blade. It's had a long and relaxing WD40 bath, which has gotten a lot of the crap out of the works.

Question was, what to do with this?

First of all DON'T PANIC

Maybe reprofile it and still use it as a can opener?

I'd be tempted to turn it into a slightly shortened technician's screwdriver, but the rescued can opener is pretty good. :tu:

I'd had that thought in mind too. Funny enough if it had been the KL89,I might have gone for it

Nice work Kirky.   :tu:

If that auction had finished with me on top I was planning to dismantle both knives and build one up with the best tools from both and then replace the blade and can opener in the other with Pioneer parts that I have in my junk box.

But I was at least a couple of bidders down the finishing order.  :(
Factoring in postage halfway around the world tends to make my top bid a little short most times, but I do pick up the occasional goodie.
The secret is persistence and the opinion that there will always be "another one".

Cheers Peter,thank you :salute:

I'd thought of the idea of building one from the two as a worst case scenario, but it didn't come to that :D :D
PS there's another two coming up this weekend.
