D & D request
on: January 26, 2015, 10:39:58 PM
So I've finally talked my family into trying Dungeons and Dragons!

Does anyone in the UK have any spare old books and dice I could swap/borrow?

In return I can offer a Swedish trangia?

Let me know D & D fans.

Lol. I used to play Runequest , Traveller, the Dredd rpg, Car Wars etc with my mates all the time. Also board based games like Space Hulk and Blood Bowl.
I think my 2 would really enjoy d & d. Start there and build up to Traveller I reckon....

Cheers Kirky.

Wow... In these modern days, I really didn't think anybody was still into D&D. Must be around 10 years ago, since I've last played anything, that was even based on the original D&D rules...

Cheers for the info, but my daughter is 17. I'm just after an old book, doesn't matter how old or what condition. I'm looking in charity shops etc and next pay day I'll prolly start looking at Amazon marketplace.

Nice! Look for some PDF books online, you might even find some short adventures/scenarios to play, with maps and pics and stuff!

I wish you'd asked 10 months ago. I gave away a complete set of 3.0 and 4.0 core books.

I can check around. I'm not in the U.K. so not sure what shipping would cost. I have 3 spare sets of dice I got as 'loaners'. We have a game shop in the area that does auctions about quarterly, and a set of the core books (usually for 3.0) can usually be gotten for $10. If you're interested, I can look into that for you.

EDIT: Also, the rules for version 3.5 of D&D are available on-line, free and legal, as the D20 SRD.

And the Pathfinder version likewise available at...

HOW did I not see this?

Yeah, use the online PDFs. Core book "only", but with that and a couple bucks of dice, you're ready to roll. I know several GMs who limit their table only to what is in the free online material, particularly if they are running something at a convention.

Alternatively, check GURPS. The stripped down core rules are there, and they are fine for fantasy. No magic IIRC, but if you're the GM, MAKE IT UP! Or leave it out because magic systems are kind of a pain with newbies. Advantage is you only need 3d6 for everything. Shadowrun has their FULL core rule book at archive.org under an "academic" license, but it looks like it is from the publisher, https://archive.org/details/Shadowrun5thEd.CoreRulebook. You only need D6s. But you do need at least a dozen.
"Even if it is only the handful of people I meet on the street, or in my home, I can still protect them with this one sword" Kenshin Himura

Necessity is the mother of invention. If you're not ready, it's "a mother". If you are, it's "mom".

The benefit of all the systems that exclusively use d6's is that the dice can be found virtually anywhere; grocery stores, pharmacies, dollar stores, etc. Which can be very handy, and is very affordable.

The bad side is you don't get to play with all the cool shaped dice. :D

My buddy back home has the field still. We painted and modded it a good bit. Also played a ton of Car Wars and Traveller many years ago.

Real wife into D&D.

Traveller was my favourite, then Runescape, Judge Dredd and Bloodbowl but we played a bit of car wars too.

Is your real wife Monrogue or the mother of your daughter? I can't keep up
