The Trusted One's
on: January 28, 2015, 02:16:29 AM
I've been wanting to start this topic for to long.  :multi:

A topic on the tools i use and trust. I make a living being a jack of all trades. Carrying a multitool and using it is how I make my living.  I doubt I'd have the job i do without my edc.

I have a idea of what this topic will be like but who knows how it's going to go. If it ends up sucking I'm sorry.

What I'm up too.

I'm going to keep you posted on what tool I'm carrying/using , how it works, how it feels to use and how it's holding up to my use.

This topic will not be on any one tool . It will be on the tools I use and trust.

If i don't think its a fitting tool for me to use working I won't be talking about it here.

This is a topic on my Trusted Tools there use, abuse, what works good on them and what don't.  Tool maintenance will also be a part. I take good care of my tool a huge part of having a good tool is knowing how to take care of it.

well I guess there's only one way to start.

I've been busy restoring a used trailer home we got as a trade in at work this winter.

My Vic Spirit has been my edc work tool most days lately.

I do keep a surge in my winter jacket for my outdoor work but thankfully I haven't had much.

Some in action pics.

Opening paint

Pulling nails and staples has been my spirits biggest use lately.

Cutting through sheet rock with the butter knife blade.

The spirit awl makes a nice hole in just about anything.

I reground the phillips driver after it'd tip exploded.

If you have any suggestions or questions please post.

If you don't this is just going to be one long rant about a crazy man's tools. .

Thanks for following.  :salute:

Good topic.

How did the Spirit's Philips screwdriver tip fail?   Was the failure due to it being too soft, e.g., did it deform?

I think it was to hard. It shattered when I was using it. It must have tighten a thousand screws before it broke. .

Vic took good care of me but couldn't fix my spirit.  Long story.

I agree  :tu: This is lining up to be an excellent thread Joel.

THIS is what multitools is all about. It doesn't matter about the brand, or where it's made, or how much it cost, or what anyone else thinks about them .... it's what works for you. I tried to capture that in my thread about pliers ergos HERE. The magic is all about how well the tool works in your hand, and the connection you build with it. Knowing how much the tool can take, and when to back off so it can save another day.

I have a friend who does similar things to you in rented homes. His favourite multitool is a really nasty cheapo off brand thing. It's been at his side for years, and has become a faithful companion. He has seen a lot of my multitools, and one of the first thing he looks for is the can opener. The one on his, is one of the lobster claw thingies - but a very open design. That is his most used tool for pulling the plinth/kickboard off kitchen cupboards to get access underneath. He looks at many modern, top end tools with disdain, because he can tell by looking at the can opener that it's not suitable for that job, so in his mind the entire tool is no good.

We all value different things in our tools (multi or dedicated) and I do love to see the philosophy of why different people like different things, and the things they do in their lives which make certain tools so important to them.

I'll shut up now, otherwise I'll be writing more than you in your own thread  :P :D :D

First, I'm impressed you could reprofile a Phillips.

Second, I really like your utility blade.

Third, I think this is a great thread :tu:

Kyle wants to see some more spirit use.

Ok.

I had a boring day but I got a few pics. Most of the day I was repairing holes in sheet rock.

I also replaced all the door knobs.

Opening up hardware

removing old knob

Installing new.
Something a tool with a bit driver might not be able to do.

I've been sanding my sheet rock repairs this morning. No action for the spirit so far.

Hey Joel,

I think the bit adapter that fits the Fuse, Blast, etc. will fit onto the philips head of the Spirit and work okay.  If you have one, give it a try.

I was dreading this thread starting up when you talked about the idea you had for it. Well at least my wallet was with so many Spirit pics and stories.

I too love the chisel.  It also surprises me how many people don't know that it has 2 wire strippers on that implement.  I actually had an electrician once ask my what the "weird cutter part was' while I was prying the cover of a VFD he was wiring up,  I grabbed a piece of his 2 gauge wire and zipped around it with the large diameter cutter and pulled the sheath off that wire and handed it back to him.  I saw him a few days later and checked out the new Spirit he was sporting....
