Removing leatherman etching??
on: January 31, 2015, 03:22:28 PM
Hi guys,

I just bought a really nice looking leatherman juice C2 over on the big auction sight. I'm really happy with the tool as it looks to be brand new and I got it for four a great price,  ($15). The only thing that I don't like is that the tool was engraved on one of the steel scales with someone's name. Now I don't have the tool in hand yet but from the pictures it looks like some of the "engraving" has already started to rub off which makes me think that this isn't a true engraving but rather a printed on text.  So, do any of you guys have some wisdom to impart as to how I might get rid of this text. I'd prefer a method that doesn't involve sanding as I think that would ruin the finish on the scale. Thanks!

Rubbing compound will rub that out in no time.

I use a generic product. I have a course grind and a fine grind. I think any type will work.

Good Luck!

Thanks guys,
The tool should arrive some time next week.  I'll pick up some rubbing compound and I'll let you know how it turns out!  Wish me luck!

If that is print, your finger nails will work just fine. All rubbing combounds will remove that, and will do little more damage, if you are not careful enough.

Just make sure you go slowly and easy. The aluminium scales top finish, while Type-2 anodized, will still rub off if you're not careful.

If it's only printed, than paint thinner/turpentine should remove it, if laser etched there's little you can do without leaving uneven and marred surface, sorry.

How long have LM been making the new version of the Juice ?  I didn't think it had been that long (but I could be wrong  ;) )

I would carefully scrape it off with a new/sharp razor blade.

A ScotchBrite pad gets the unwanted etching off of most of the tools I acquire.

Hey guys I have an update to report!

I found my new Leatherman Juice C2 waiting in the mailbox for me last night when I got home! (always a good day when you find toys in the mail box) :D.

I quickly went to work on the name to see if I could remove it without damaging the tool.  The first thing I tried was to simply scratch it off with my thumb nail, and surprisingly this removed a good chunk of the name!!  Apparently the name is applied with some type of paint so it sits proud of the surface and isn't cut into the surface like a laser etching.

After scratching it away with my thumbnail, there was only a slight ghost image of the name remaining.  I grabbed some Wrights Copper buffing compound, (the closest thing I had to rubbing compound) and a paper towel, and went to work on the remaining name.  after about two minutes of gentle rubbing I wiped the compound off and the name was completely gone!

Check out the picture, I'm very happy with the results and a little surprised at how easily the name came off.

Thanks for your help and awesome suggestions everyone!
