Case - I want a representative
on: February 06, 2015, 07:27:32 AM
Hi there guys and girls,

I don’t have any Case knives and would like to get at least one to have as a representative of the brand.

Question is, which one is a good overall specimen that I can actually enjoy using?

I can buy from here, or any other source

When I think of Case xx I think of their Peanut and their Sodbuster.

SS or CV, depending on whether you like rust or not.  :D

Did agree with DKS about the Peanut, but for my money I'd go for a small or medium stockman :tu:

On that note, they do lots of beautiful bone or horn scales, but the classic yellow Delrin is easy on the eye and a joy in the hand :tu:
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

+1 Muskrat.  My favorite design.   I also like the small Texas toothpicks.  For usability the stockman is a great choice.

My favourite patterns of theirs are:

You need to have a peanut. Every knife knut needs a Case peanut, just for the perspective of a title knife that cuts big.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Well, the only Case I have is a Stockman so that gets my vote as being a good representative.

In my experience, Case quality is unfortunately hit and miss. I've had knives with bad dye jobs, springs too strong or too weak, and bad rubbing. That's out of about two dozen knives. I'm not saying they're bad knives per se, just that the quality is highly variable. For that reason, I strongly recommend buying a knife you can handle in person, if at all possible.

That said, I'm a fan of the Texas Jack (pretty uncommon), Sowbelly, and Large Stockman (three spring) patterns. Some people really dislike their stainless, but it's always been good enough for me in a light duty knife. I also like wood handles; I think they look classy and you avoid the potential of getting a pale bone dye.

Sent from a small screen.

May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

Lots of knife folks in the "traditional world like this Tony Bose designed Swayback Gent. Well crafted and finished it's a big winner with Case guys!

The description is wrong...it's not a Stockman.
http://www.sharpedge.co.za/case-pocket-worn-old-red-sway-medium-stockman-ss

Other models of Case knives are of variable finish quality these days so if you can check them out in person, it would be better. Look for no blade wobble and correct edge grinds. Most are fine but It's always better to inspect them if you can.

Other iconic models include the Lg Stockman and The Lg Trapper

Perhaps, rather than a specific model, you might want to look at getting a Case with the yellow Delrin scales.  That's such a classic Case look IMO.

or .... just get whichever knife pattern you think you'll enjoy using the most. Doesn't matter how well the knife is made if it's a style/pattern which doesn't suit you

Thanks for the input, it sounds like I should get a Delrin one in whatever pattern I like.
The three bladed Stockman is mentioned a lot and will probably be first and my local dealer has the CV one in stock.

Here's an old shot of mind that I didn't include before; a CV medium Stockman in yellow Delrin.

I never really had a good case, they were always crappy second hands, until my wife bought me one, she bought me a CASE XX Orange Curly Maple Zebra Trapper, I so loved the wood handles, she also had it stamped even the leather sheath she had my initials stamped it, I just thought it was so nice I think I have yet to use it.. Here's a crappy pic.

How about a Case with multiple blades and therefore multiple functions.

Somewhat similar to the multiple function of a Vic. Alox Farmer.
