Gerber Dime with caplifter removed
on: February 07, 2015, 06:53:34 AM
Has somebody removed the cap lifter from the Dime? I thought I saw it somewhere but I can't find it. I included a mockup I made.

I'd say that a better mod would be removing the Dime and keeping the cap lifter ::)

I was going to say that the one clear advantage the Dime has over the Squirt is it's excellent cap lifter. :D  I know I'll not be cutting mine off.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I've been seeing a lot of negative comments on the Dime.  I've never owned a Gerber multi tool, but I gotta say I don't expect to much from a light duty tool.  This one appears to be more ergonomic than anything else I've seen in its class, and has a pretty good load out.  It's not likely ever going to make my rotation, but I can't understand all the hatin' on it either

For me, the tool is just another 'thing' designed for our throw away society.  Its not something that will get years of use and passed on to someone else.  It has no legacy or lasting appeal.  It will break with use and be thrown out and forgotten.   Its only selling feature is price and I would happily pay more for a SAK which is a quality item that blows away the dime in every way possible.

The people that don't carry or use the Dime have no problems to report with them though.  :D

I carry and use it! And for what it is I definitely wouldn't call it useless. It does it's job fairly well when called upon, but you're right. It certainly doesn't do it as smooothly and with as much quality as a SAK would. But you know you're getting Gerber quality when you buy it.

okay, tbh I don't HATE the Dime, but I'm certainly not going to say I like it.

When I bought mine, I opened it and at first I thought I had bought a fake.
Eventually I figured out that the quality is just "down there".

Also the so called file is just a joke, the drivers are the stubbiest ...           ...        ...       in the world and the first one I got was a total nail breaker, the package opener sat too low to get at the nail nick when closed and the backsprings bent when I gave a moderate squeeze on the pliers. The replacement seems to have addressed most of these problems.

To me, the Dime is like the Juice range...  Great concept, piss-poor implementation

Your assessments are pretty spot on, I think I just got a half decent one. No nail breaking issues, but yeah the quality really isn't good.
