Anybody Getting a Dime Travel?
on: February 07, 2015, 03:44:28 PM
Is anybody getting the new version of the Dime? Looks like the differences are:
-The blade has been replaced with a long file.
-The package opener has been replaced with a zipper hook.
-The small flathead / Phillips driver no longer has the, ahem, "file" machined into it.

Hopefully, the file is properly ground and hardened. The file on the Dime (I've had eight at one point) wasn't really a file; just some shallow lines machined into the non-hardened piece of steel. They weren't even angled. Hopefully this is fixed. I didn't see a definite shot of the underside, but I hope it's cut so you can groove or cut light metal with it.

Not sure how I feel about the zipper hook. I don't fly, so this could have been anything for me. I do lie, and find uses for, the Victorinox hook though. And I like that it comes out the end instead of being in the T-position like the Victorinox. If I decide I don't like it, it would be very easy to turn it into a hole punch.

Here's a review (with some good photos) from Blade Barrel Bezel...

I never liked the Dime, but blade less MT's intrigue me so this one might be on the want list.

Always room for another bladeless MT I say.  The file looks like a big improvement.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Firstly, I don't fly, so I have no need to have my hopes shattered by thinking I can carry this and having it confiscated anyway  :D

Secondly, while I like the file, I also like the package opener and blade on the original model. If I did get one of these it would probably just be to harvest the file from it, and replace the knife with it - keeping the package opener. I certainly have no yearnings for one of those bloody silly hook things  :)

Same, but I might ditch the scissors not the blade.

Upon zooming way in on the photos in the review I linked, it appears the underside of the file is not ground.

I like the package opener so I think I'll stick with the regular.
