Pocket Wrench III (not really :-))
on: February 14, 2015, 06:45:24 AM
Ever since I got my PWII there was one bug bear I had with its overly simplistic design, it's the rounded pry bar end which does exactly only that and has only one function.

So instead of scr3wing my own PWII I decided to order one of those EDC Gear $2.50 jobbies from an Asian web site. to play with and experiment.

It's really a straight forward mod, some of which Kampfer hinted to in one of his threads, too.

Now the previous single-function pry-bar end comes with 5 functions - pry-bar, scraper, nail-puller, flat-head screwdriver and box cutter. I like this mod so much I will most likely repeat it on my genuine PWII.

Cheers!  :)

Looks good  :tu: the finish on the end that you worked on is perfect even close up

What did you use to 'blue' it?

Thanks guys!  :salute:

@sparky, thanks...that finish would be the effect of acid wash in PCB etchant (ferric chloride), followed by a stonewash tumble.

Maybe when I get a new file...totally trashed mine on this mod. The steel is hardened and very hard to work on. Not sure about the genuine PWII, though.

I sharpen the tip of my PWII, it was actually really soft.

I know the feeling. The thing is so hardened it shatters like glass if you  try to bend it!  :ahhh

My files did't even work on the thing. I need to order some of those diamond coated sets.

If you carry your keys outside your pockets then I can highly recommend the Shard.

The Punisher is one of the best looking and most affordable key-chain OPMTs but be warned, it's a pocket ripper. If you carry your keys inside the pocket you will have to soften that OPMTs edges all over, including the extra sharp pry ends.  :multi:

Gotcha :tu: I'm an outside pocket carrier, or clip the keys to the outside of the bag, but still I think running the Dremel around the edging a few times might be a good idea if I get one..

Decided to give v2.0 a go, this one sports slightly longer pry bar ends. The shorter one (v1) is primarily a scraper then everything else, the longer (v2) is a pry bar first then scraper etc.

I also managed to bust my neighbor's file in the process although not as bad as mine so for a $5 investment in parts I am now faced with spending $25 on two new files  ::) ???

I really need to do some homework on different file types, hardness and materials they're made of.

I really like that design.  I wonder if there's enough length to add a slight bend for better leverage.

yet another cool mod - are you filing those by hand ? (given you mentioned busting two files)

Thanks, it really depends on steel hardness and right selection of tools for the job. I used 250mm saw file with diamond-b@stard cut made of steel with high-chromium content. For a slit I used $2 Stanley miniature triangular file, this one held up much better, though.

Tapered and softened the edges, then added the final brushed-look finish on the slopes with 180 grit sand paper. Acid bath and stone tumble followed.

All in all about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour.

The pocket wrench while not extremely hard, is made of hardened steel so be warned  8)

cool, thanks for that :) i was thinking of having a go with my dremel (my solution in search of a problem) but i think your method would get better results, and a lot more satisfying too ! must go looking for some files on the net

Funny, I also bought sole cheap pwII for the same mod at the beginning of February. But I still wait them and will do the cuts with a dremel.

Just checked over at SPAMCORP where I got mine from....the cheap ones are gone now, the cheapest at the moment is $5. These were going for some $2.30 - $2.80 during Christmas period.

I wish I bought more than just two :-(
