Cheers mate.  We did indeed have a great time.

On a related note to one of my other threads: the string vest worked very well.  :D

Oh I am so jealous. Grant and I were just saying how badly we needed to go kayaking.
It is -33C with the windchill today. I can't see us going out any time soon :(

-33C is more than enough to stop me even thinking about going out my front door, let along sitting in a canoe! :ahhh

You need to move somewhere nice and warm like....... Scotland.

The forecast wasn't great for later on, but this early in the day it was nice and calm despite the snow.

and just to show that I did my share of the paddling:

Lastly, here's a shot that shows the water actually starting to freeze.  It's not exactly obvious but the distortion on the water isn't caused by ripples, but by the fact that ice crystals were slowly staring to form.

The benefit of sitting in the back is that you get away with so much more, including taking pics of the person in front of you!

One time the person in the front of my boat turned around at the wrong time....

On a completely unrelated note, canoes and kayaks here are called "divorce boats" for some reason....

lol. I get that. :D

I did in fact take a shot spell in the front seat, right when we had a good strong head wind.  After we got to a more sheltered spot my mate said "looks like you really had to paddle hard there Gareth"......errr and you weren't Matt?

 :D

Actually one of the good things about this trip was that it showed we actually worked pretty well together.  :tu:

I have had the canoe out since this thread was started (honest) but I don't think I ever bothered with any pics.  Anyway, today was the first time I got the chance and the weather to put paddle to water this year.  Just down at my local loch again and only for an hour or so.  What makes today a special trip was that it was the first time I convinced my daughter to come along.  Not that you can tell, but she even did her share of paddling. ;)

Seems like the front of your boat is the perfect spot for a nap!

Especially if the one in the back does all the paddling!

I'm wanting to try ocean kayaking.  I have a friend who does that.  Problem is saving the money to get a kayak.  As soon as I have a spare $30 or $40 bucks in my pocket I buy another knife or multitool.

Keep an eye on Craigslist.  You can often find a deal on a kayak there.  Of course, the kayak may be expensive, but it's only part of the expense.  The rest of the setup looks like this:

Kayaking PFD- $100
Paddle- $100
Safety Kit- $20-50
Skirt- $50-80
Roof Rack for the Car- $150
J- Racks for the kayak to attach to the roof rack- $100-150

Of course, once you have all of that then you can kayak for years without spending another dollar, although $5 for a paddle leash would also be a good plan.  As would a spare paddle.  And, if you are going to do any rock hopping, I'd suggest a helmet too.

Depending on how far south you are, you might also want to think about a dry top or a whole dry suit as the ocean is a pretty cold place up my way.
