Went with wife of a bike ride after supper.   Stop at one of the son's home and saw youngest grandson (3), and left him wound up by time we left.

After a discussion with my neighbour about the Holly tree that's come up in my garden (some time ago) that I believed was an offshoot of his, I've chopped it down as its now starting to damage my shed, and I've copper nailed the stump.

I explained several times that it's an offshoot of his but he insists it isn't.  I explained about the copper nails but he didn't care. Now I wait as the tree dies so I can dig up what's left on my side.  I wish I could do the same with his only conifer tree that's around 60 foot tall now.

Took the family car camping for the weekend at a site in Algonquin Park.

After we got set up and had a swim we got hammered by a Thunderstorm.

Our campsite was the lowest piece of land before the lake. The rain from the small hill behind us and the adjacent road drained into our campsite. Within minutes we had six inches of water where land should be.

We unstaked the tent and moved it to higher, sloping ground with everything in it.

Then we trenched our campsite and made drainage ditches to the lake using the fiskars camo axe and a small trowel.

The kids were safe in the car and we got chased to the car by cracks of lightening.

The lightning passed in about 15minutes and after another hour the rain stopped.

I was very impressed that the tent stayed mostly dry inside. There was only one small puddle but I suspect that it came in while we moved the tent through the deep run off.

The sleeping pads kept the blankets up and out of the puddle.

I had to bail the fire pit out. It was full of water. Then I added a couple buckets full of beach sand to make it easier to get a fire going.

Luckily the firewood was in the car and dry. It was nice to have even though the temperature outside was still hot.

The next two days were nice and the kids did well sitting in the canoe and hauling their age appropriate share across a portage.

Went shooting today with my new AR-15. Had way to many failures and now I'm quite turned off by the AR platform.

Skinned a house. Some people use crowbars and shatter the shingles into little pieces that you then need to bend over and pick up. I was just grabbing the shingles and tearing them off the wall bear handed. (typo intentional- actually, wore gloves)

No, I'm not agressive. I also want to know what moron hung shingles with (a) the nails exposed rather than on the top edge, and (b) with FINISH nails in the first place

Gardening, lots of gardening. My bombsite of a garden is slowly getting there. I wish I'd put a bit of sunblock on though. The tops of my arms are glowing  :-[

I'm hoping this is the start of our summer, I've got my holibobs in a few weeks in Norfolk. The place I've rented has a hot tub in the garden so I want to make full use of it  :D

Actually I was in the UK for nearly all of September 2012 and over that time there were only four properly raining days.

I was off work recovering from my back surgery from June to the end of October 2012, it was lovely over here then. I couldn't get around much but it was nice to spend so much time sat in the garden. I really didn't want to come back to work after that.

Had I known I would have sent you loads of sunscreen  :D.  Here in California its pretty much all we get.  I'd like some rain please.  We need rain in our drought stricken state.

Set out today to tackle a local mountain.   Its still warm out here in the West so we got started about 8am.  We really could have started at 7 but it is a Saturday and the hike is only 2-4 hours depending on your fitness.   Elevation gain was about 1500-2000 depending on who you ask.

Great views and not many on the trail.  We did see several people on the way down, they we're coning up and it was getting warm.  I again saw so many people with 1 little bottle of water .  I carried my 3L camelback and my friend had 2 16oz bottle plus her nalgene 32 oz.

Because of the incline many hikers said this was a challenging trail.  I actually didn't have any problem going up or coming back down.  My hike buddy works in an office M-F so she struggled a little on the way up.

In the picture with the water tower at the bottom you can see the trail to the left.  Lots of boulder where rock climbers work out.  Its pretty cool seeing these men and women hanging from such heights.

I didn't take a lot of pics as I was too busy enjoying the hike and day off.

Took a drive up in the mountains to see the changing aspen. Very pretty drive. Also saw a handful of deer and elk. Was hoping to see a big elk herd but apparently its still a bit early for them to be moving down out of the high country.

Hawker hunting!

I go out hunting dragonflies and damselflies as often as I can. With a camera, that is.

Hawkers (called Darners in North America) are among the most spectacular of dragonflies. They are my favorites, definitely.

Today, I "shot" a Southern Hawker, yesterday a Migrant Hawker. A Brown Hawker in July and a Green-eyed Hawker in June. This year, I got a total of 76 hawkers on camera, males and females of 6 different species. The Hawkers in the pics are all males.

For more information about Hawkers see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeshnidae
