Sargent & Co. New Haven CT - Compound Diagonal Cutters
on: February 23, 2015, 11:28:13 PM
I picked these up recently for a couple bucks at an antique shop. I've had many Sargent products such as wire side cutters or parallel jaw pliers but have never seen these before. They are small but the compound action lets them go right through stout solid copper wire. I do wiring work all the time and these quickly replaced my Krauter dikes.

Nice cutters.  Great buy!   What is the product number on the hub?

Thank you! It is surely a pleasure to use, cutting effort is minimal. My guess is that it was used in some assembly operation where repetitive stress was an issue. Possible for women in wartime production seems plausible or something similar.

On the hub, just the maker's name & address, no model number. All the other variants I have are also stamped Sargent on each handle where it fits into your palm. I forgot to add that this one is stamped Bernard there. If you look for other compound tools, many of them have "Bernard's Patent" stamped on them.

I am a sucker for pliers-type tools I don't have. Cannot stop picking them up if the right price. This one is truly unique amongst them. Now for a set of end nippers!

I’m surprised  :o they look exactly like Maun side cutters which have been made in the UK since 1944
Those look like good quality cutters  :tu:

No question, identical in nearly every way. The Bernard patent referenced on some of the New Haven, CT tools goes back to the mid 1890s. I have one in my lighter repair toolbox, I will have to post a pic.

You wound me sir, I have 2!

One without extras, it runs around between various toolboxes, workbenches, and cars. The other has the original pouch with (2) extra jaws. I've seen your collection, I hate you.

 ;)

By the way, are those Sargent parallel jaw pliers in the bottom left?

Good eye!  Earlier version of the Sargent pliers from the predecessor company.  They are Bernard Model 102. Bernard created the tool, sold out to Schollhorn and later became Sargent.

Gotta agree with novice.  Never heard of Maun before today.

Welcome to the club!  Shoot some pics of those plierenches!

Will do. The pouched one I have is like yours on the left with the rounded/grooved jaw. What was that for?

Spring jaw for creating replacement springs.
