Carbide cutter strength
on: March 09, 2015, 09:13:27 PM
I decided to rotate the MP600 in for work this week, and noticed one of the inserts was broken. It kind of looked like it had shattered. What makes this especially odd is that I haven't used the cutters for anything yet

Anyone else experience this? Seems strange.

I recall MultiMat broke a set of cutters, but IIRC he was cutting something hard.

IIRC the Gerber cutters are very hard, but also brittle.  Maybe you touched the corner of a cutter when gripping a larger nut or pipe or something ?

Wow! That definitely looks similar to what I am looking at. Like Grego says, I must have been touching when I was bearing down on a bolt head.

Why doesn't Gerber make their cutters out of something similar to what LM uses? I believe theirs are 154CM. May not be as hard, but at least they wouldn't be so brittle. Oh well, looks like I will be ordering some new inserts

I think I read somewhere that Gerber made theirs of hard carbide/steel so that they would be more wear resistant when making hundreds of cuts on softer wire (eg copper), whereas LM went for a softer but less brittle material so you can tackle hard wire etc without shattering the cutters.  Two different approaches, but both legitimate.

Not heard from Neil in a long time now sadly. :( Mat as some 'real life' going on right now, but he keeps in touch every so often.

I shattered one of the inserts today
Found replacements  on the seller known by the South America  river name
I probably used the tool to excess,  on some  hard  steel wire

Now I know the carbide insert limitations,  as they are brittle

I will only cut non ferrous wire,  or very soft steel wire
