A blunter nosed Spirit with a touch of Wingman
on: March 19, 2015, 12:43:50 PM
When I saw Dr Z's BN MT in the "ST400" thread I couldn't resist.   As indicated its the edge access which is particularly improved.

Found it quite easy to close up without plier rest contact and just normal process with cable-ties fitted.  Now I have extended one plier rest with a Wingman scissors spring arm.  Not yet got something suitable for the other side.  A drill maybe

Orginally I bought an MP600 for BN capability.  Was OK, left the pliers deployed on my bench, but never liked the half-open access to the individual tools.  Had never totally taken the Spirit, it would never have displaced Rebar for EDC, partly because I can chose how easy to make tool deployment but in BN form the Spirit easily relegates the MP600.  Basically I wasted my money on the MP600.

An unexpected benefit, because the Spirit plier jaw faces weren't parallel, the cutter now closes further and the soft wire notch is greatly improved.

I can see the Spirit growing on me if I can solve the nail breaking difficulty of deploying the Phillips driver.

One other thing, I now have a proper lanyard ring and I made the Spirit knifeless for UK legal carry.  Work it out, I am not going to spell out how.  ;)

You can half-deploy the metal file to gain extra room for your finger to dig the Phillips out.

Thank you.  I feel a right dope not having worked that out.

You're welcome. Even the brightest minds get stuck sometimes and can use a little push ;)

Glad to see you making this tool work for you.  I dont think we've seen many Spirit mods so it's nice to see someone taking a crack at it.

Lovely mod! Did you grind the knife blade off to make the cool lanyard ring?

Having missed the opportunity at Halloween I wasn't going to say but in recognition of my member obligation to document the mod ...   :D

The adjacent tool is the chisel.  Well that's given the game away.  I think I thinned the 550 down by 2 or 3 threads and it passes fairly comfortably.
