thrunight Ti3 or Olight i3s ? help needed
on: April 03, 2015, 12:11:44 PM
right.... a quick post. (hopefully)
Kirky convinced me my life would be richer if I changed my LL p3 (which I was quite happy with for EDC) for an O'light i3s about 9 months ago and as much as I hate to admit it , he was right
but it seems to have gone AWOL  :-\
I tend to shy away from this area of the forum as I cant afford for you lot of enablers to lead me down the 'flashlight road' I'm poor enough already, BUT I do use my little torch several times per day.
I must admit I don't like the dark , it's not a 'fear' I just find it very irritating and debilitating.
I like having something to hand AT ALL TIMES to light my way.
don't need to burn the eyeballs or rampaging wildlife, nor do I need to use it as a defensive weapon for muggers or zombies, I just want to be able to see.
so here's what I do need~
good runtime is important..... very important !
cheep batteries, preferably easy to find/purchase (so probably AAA or AA at a push)
SMALL , most likely with a pocket clip (lanyard ring nice but not as important, although I might not have lost the Olight if it'd been on my keys )
I do want a firefly/moonlight mode ! I often use my torch indoors so I don't need massive amounts of light a lot of the time and obviously it saves power
a good medium level of light, for dog walking, is important. probably more useful to me than a really powerful beam , but obviously there are some occasions that a huge throw is damn handy to have if possible.
I'm not worried about how the 'on off' works , clicky or twist both work for me, neither bother me , but one handed operation is a must, can't honestly see a torch of this size requiring 2 hands , but I'm just saying, and it needs to stay on if/when I let go of it.
robust ! I'm a bit of a clutz  it WILL be dropped, and probably on to hard ground, and into water, puddles and wet grass more likely than deep water. it wouldn't be a first for the whole TD to fall in a body of water mind you  ::)
I do like the size of the Olight, I often hold my torch in my teeth to free up both hands, even the Lenser P3 made me drool and dribble after extended use (and it's not a good look , believe me)so lightweight and SMALL ! did I mention that already ?
I'm most likely to go for another Olight i3s, but then I spotted the Thrunight Ti3 which is very similar from what I can tell. blooming internet search  any advice will be appreciated, read and processed. gratefully !
£15 (ish) is about a good price for me as I will probably lose it eventually
I'm terrified of being trapped somewhere and not having a light source, I have nightmares about being stuck in a lift or mineshaft without light, unlikely to happen I know, but for 15 quid it's not worth taking the chance  :D

After thought ~ ideally it would be nice if the 'modes' started with the lowest power first and get higher as you go through them ie moonlight, medium, high (strobe is a pain, best avoided IMHO)

They were both on my list. I got the i3s. Now I want the ti3 or maybe the TiS. That will have to wait until I've paid for shipping on a few other things so I know how much I have left to spend. I hate waiting. How helpful is that. Not very probably.

I haven't had the Ti3, but I've had the i3s and all of these that i've had have been absolutely stunning little lights. The run times are awesome, the lights've been dropped, kicked, drowned, just washed under running water... and they've still functioned perfectly.

Also.... what do you think about the Lumintop Tool AAA light? That one I've had and been using since 26th September last year, that is... over half a year already. It's everything I said above about the i3s, just has a clicky. (therefore a tad longer).

The Olight is a bit more convenient to hold in your teeth than the Lumintop, though, not sure why - because of the protruding rubber switch of the latter, maybe.

The Olight with its 0.5 mode can last reaaaaaaalllly long, though.

I never had the olight i3 but I did/do have 3 versions of its predecessor, the iTP A3 (same maker, just the name changed) and they are my preferred twisty flashlights. I don't like the memory function on keychain flashlights too much and the fact that the Thrunite also has a strobe mode (although hidden) is another minus point in my book.

The Tank007 E09 that dks mentioned is a nice light also, but I never got into carrying it too much.

If you don't intend to carry it on a keyring, then I'd opt for the Lumintop Tool AAA. Can be had for about $15 shipped.

I can provide comparison pics if needed. ;)

the lumintop is rather 'sexy'

the tank seems to be Very bright from what I've read ? it is 3 modes isn't it ?
and is it a good runtime

I got a Ti3 not so long ago and have to say I'm a fan.  The big plus, IMO, is that you can get it in a Neutral White LED, much nicer light to see things by.

For keychain carry I have changed to a NiteCore TUBE and is a dream (little, 40 lumens, durable, MicroUSB charging, battery saving!)

For pocket carry I carried:

- iTP-OLight i3 (Good) AAA
- iTP-Olight-A1 (Very good) CR123A

And now I carry:

- ZebraLight H52 (Very very good) AA!

You can try  :tu:

You may want to consider Fenix LD09 or LD12. They are AA lights but;

The Low on the LD12 is close to a firefly mode (3 lumens), 4 brightness levels, Strobe and SOS are hidden. Just a wee bit chunkier than I'd like.

The LD09 is a very pocketable, very handy AA light and it comes with a good clip. I love mine, I can't see it going anywhere if I can help it.

Fenix LD12 to the left, LD09 to the right. Size comparison with a Vic Pioneer.

Notice that the LD09 can tailstand on the switch, or rather balance on it.

... the fact that the Thrunite also has a strobe mode (although hidden) is another minus point in my book.

The Olight i3s also has this. Since it is a hidden mode I don't see it as a negative. You won't normally cycle through it but it is there should you ever need it one day.

I would say go for the Olight i3s, based on the fact I have one and love it (sure, it would be nicer if it went L>M>H but not a biggie), and also because I don't like the word "Thrunite".

Mode sequence might be the only significant difference between these lights.  Do you want firefly mode first (Ti3), or do you want medium (i3s)?

I'd rather go for medium first as that's the most used mode, I think. We don't live in complete darkness all time to cherish the firefly mode so much. It's very useful, but useless at dusk, let's say.

So, @TD, have you bought any yet?? :pok:

If you don't have a Zebralight you need a Zebralight. unless you don't of course. But I've been veyr impressed with the durability of mine.

Anyway, back to vaguely on topic, how about a Fenix E05? Right price, has low, medium and high outputs, right battery.

After the video that Cuttlerylover released I would go for a Thrunight. They have changed their warranty to 24 months replacement, which is pretty damn good

That little Tube looks really good, and it's only £7 from SPAMCORP including the rechargeable battery.
