Going to New Zealand, should i...
on: April 04, 2015, 03:29:34 PM
Going to New Zealand with 62 year old father and 29 year old younger sister.

8 days roadtrip in hired motorhome so very sedate affair but i'm paying my extra $25 as i refuse to be naked tool wise
(mum and sister always book tickets air tickets without baggage  )

I'm thinking about taking my Carbon steel Farson Blade and CS spetznav shovel. (was considering my fiskar x5 but decided 'loo' shovel would be more use then micro-axe)

My question is should i leave my Becker 'necker' bk11 and esee candiru at home since its such a soft trip to force my hand to really utilise the Farson Blade fully to evaluate it objectively.

I tend to pair the bk11 and candiru in my EDC as i can happily use either as a 'one-knife' with the candiru being more urban stashable friendly. The thing with the farson is i can't really wear it so it will not be within reach DURING-EVERY-BREATH-I-TAKE. I believe orc numbers are low this time of year  but if middle-earth suddenly errupts into a warzone i will be really smurfty about 'BeaKie&Candi' being back in Oz.

Not taking any SAKs and I will probably have a Swisstool Spirit or LM Blast on my person and thank you all in advance for supportively guiding me through this troubling times.

Well, not having been there (but my son has), you're talking mostly towns, farms and forest.  I see no need for tiny blades.  If you're going to bring a knife, bring something that can cut (not just stab or cut tape).  Something that can cut wire (like fencing wire) may be useful.  Saw definitely.  Bottle opener?  Absolutely.

Long time, no see Santos!
I am kinda thinking of leaving the Esee home and force yourself to use the Farson.
On the other hand, take the Esee. Well because it is a Esee.

A lot of help huh?

North Island, South Island or both? I would bring the X5 and leave the Farson. So helpful eh.

Zoid & Mike: South island, its been about 10 years since i have last been there.I got kiwi relatives in Christchurch

It is highly probable i will not be processing any wood/ we are touring 'glamping' in a 6 berth caravan so we each can have a double bed each (no single bed configuration for hire)

Whippy: Brazilians tend to open beer bottles with spine of a knife, easy and keeps the ounces down (multi  and gecko shaped opener on keychain are magically free of this dilemna)
I did think of taking a heavier duty multi like the LM core or sog powerlock but i think with the 'glamping' i might just resort to a metal saw on file for any wire fence emergency

Ducty: The only esee's i own are candiru's. Perharps i should take one and carry it not as a knife but a talisman to ward off separation anxiety and evil spirits. Also there is the added bonus of the extra weight stopping my pants riding up my butt

The 'EDC Hiker' and  Mega EDC have caught my attention, never realised Svord was NZ, always assumed it was eurpean when peeps talk about the peasent knife. Fortunately the websites own store locater does not give options for Christchurch

Wondering what price they are and what makes 15n20 desirable over 1095

Zoid: It would be a long shot given our time constraints but PM your contact info :D

Trip is tomorrow and the minimal roster is as follows

Farson Survival Tool CS
Cold steel spetznav shovel
Victorinox swisstool spirit
Plus any non bladed stuff that remains on my caribeener keyring
(i'm trying to be good but i might break and pack a candiru  :-\ )

Also taking a Wenger Alinghi for my father. Its a gift to complement his fishing gear to brazil but if i give it to him here i know he wont take it... then spend the trip (ab)using my gear.  Chances are he will lose or wreck it within a few weeks and this time i will find the courage to say "This is why you can't have nice things'

reverse parenting is such a tricky thing to handle.
