84mm Alox mod(s). Help me decide.

Poll

Should I build several 2 layer 84mm Alox or just one 3 layer with only blades?

Make several two layer 84mm Alox mods with these blades with opener layers.
Make one three layer 84mm Alox with just these blades.

84mm Alox mod(s). Help me decide.
on: April 10, 2015, 04:23:12 PM
I've been gathering some knives and this is what I have in blades (or in the mail).

Main Blade / Electrician's blade
Serrated Blade / Small Blade
Butter Blade / (Combo tool / watch case opener / small clip point blade)

I don't have a watch case opener, or a small clip point blade that is in good condition.

Reasons for you recommendation?

I had an idea for a Super-Duper-Mini-Farmer:

1) Large Blade / Electrician's Blade
2) Serrated Blade / Small Blade
3) Butter Blade / Nail File
4) Saw Blade
5) Opener Layer

As much as I would like to make one multi-layer 84mm Alox: to use the thinner steel liners, I would have to breakdown a Cadet Alox for every additional layer I wanted.  That would get very costly.  Not sure I would want to revert to aluminum liners in an Alox build.

Three layers is a good size and having lots of blades is more interesting.  :tu:

Make your own from brass or nickel silver (not steel BTW) sheet.  Easy enough to do, but a bit laborious.

An 84mm with a butter would be an audacious move kosmo! I'd love to see all the different blades in one knife!

Are the originals nickel silver?  I guess that would make sense, not wanting to put unwanted wear on the blade tangs.

Brass liners would look nice.  I'll have to give this more thought.

Still ironing out decisions, gathering tools and supplies.
I'm looking into making it a Red Alox with brass liners and brass rivets.

1) Large Blade / Electrician's Blade
2) Serrated Blade / Small Blade
3) Butter Blade / (Nail File or Combo tool)
Not quit sure of the blade order yet.

I'm probably going to save the saw blade for a future Mini Farmer along with the opener layer.

A quick shot here to show the new and old liners next to the blades.  On the new liner (top) you can see an indent that will sit next to the blade tang.  This is to compensate for the slimmer tang that can be seen on the newer blade next to it.  The most important thing you need to keep in mind is not to mix up old and new parts.  They won’t work and the blade will sit wrong in the finished knife, striking the top of the small blade.  Ask me how I know.  ::)

Well, this is going to put a "crimp" in my project.  I've been examining my donor knives and reading up on potential problem before I start tearing anything apart.  All the donor knives I have, have an indent crimped into the outer liners next to the large blades.  As mentioned above, (see link to other thread) this has to do with variations in the blade thicknesses.  (Above photo is from the other thread.) In addition to needing to sacrifice an additional Cadet Alox for an inner liner, I may have to deal with different thicknesses of washers used to shim the thickness of the blades.

I was also thinking about starting by making a three layer Cellidor model before starting to break down Cadet Alox's.  However, I don't think it is possible to use these indented outer layers as inner layers in a multi-blade knife.  This means dealing with needing to work with existing inner liners and again needing washers to shim the thicknesses of the blades.

This may put a complete halt to building a three layer, all blade knife in either Alox or Cellidor and I may reconsider building several mildly modified Cadet Alox knives.

Ya if you want to use knife blades on inner layers you'll have to make washers, or use the ones from cadets.  Since cadet scales are flt they have washers in the blade layer instead of the bump like the cellidor do.

I made a couple of images that helps make the "indent" or rather the "stamped spacing" in your knife's liner more clearly identified.

Good info Kosmo and Syph007 on understanding the mixing of new and old liners!

I've just started down the Mod-Road after reading up for months...I've read much and seen a lot of Syph007's work.

thanks...strmliner

I was discussing blade thicknesses with tattoosteve99 and apparently there are several different blade thicknesses through the years.  So it will always be a something to look for (to avoid problems) when wanting to customize these knives.

Recruits have no back tools and the springs work in Alox for a better cost.

I'm in the mood to disassemble a couple of knives.  Some of my knives are looking nervous.
