Recognize this little folder?
on: April 11, 2015, 12:44:20 AM
I thought it was what I had looked at several months ago but it is pretty well used and the blade barely shows the markings because of the grim on the blade.   They guy who had it wasn't sure what it was other than made in Japan.

Using my mag glass from my Swisschamp ( the knife was filthy ) I could make out Al Mar and the logo thingy.  I didn't wipe the blade nor attempt to clean it while looking at it, I figured it was his responsibility to know what he had.  I asked how much he said $20 I offered $18 and he said take it.

Al Mar Ultralight Hawk with micarta handle and Aus 8 steel.  Nice little folder for when i want to be a gentleman  8)

Thanks everyone,  its a nice little folder now that it's all cleaned and sharpened.  Damn this little knife took quite an edge.  I've looked at Al Mar before and liked the Utralights in particular so I'm very stoked.

I carried it tonight while attending my daughters dance performance.

Great score on that Al Mar,congratulations. All of Al Mar's knives were made in Japan.

Al Mar was an exceptional man.He was a member of the Special Forces [Green Berets] who served in Viet Nam.He was a master of self defense,a knife designer who worked for Gerber and a man who earned an advanced degree in industrial design.Unfortunately he passed away more than 22 years ago but his company that he founded is still carrying on his work.

Here are two that I dug out of the dark recesses of my collection to post here.

@Toolguy Thanks for the info  :tu:.  I like the top knife you have pictured.   I'll carry my little Al Mar as my off day knife.  It really is a nice knife, I've always like his designs  and am so glad to have scored this little guy.

I just checked Al Mar's website and they're still selling the Ultralight Hawk at a considerable increase above your purchase price.

Some designs are timeless.

Some members may not know this but Al Mar was responsible for one of the most innovative designs ever offered by Gerber Legendary Blades.
