Worlds easiest alox saw mod..
on: April 11, 2015, 04:05:41 PM
I am sure this was done before, but I have been thinking about it for a while..

Though I like the woodsaw versions of the Alox Pioneers (e.g. Farmer, Harvester etc.) I was always unhappy by the sharp angles on the top of the saw (the non cutting side) which made the tool uncomfortable to hold and use, with the saw closed or deployed.

This is in contrast to the smooth tops of the majority of the tools of the SAKs.
I thus took some sandpaper (high grid, over 120, not aggressive) and sanded down, gently the two top edges.

The trick is to roll the saw a bit when sanding down so that you get a smooth, curved edge.

Also, bear in mind that the metal of the saw is not very hard so you need to be careful and check often, so that you do not remove too much metal. (NOTE: Do not use a power tool for this…..  :D )

The whole process takes 5 minutes and you end up with a more comfortable tool, with no loss of function or strength. Make sure you clean it afterwards as some of the metal you remove may get into the moving parts of the knife.

I have included a few comparison pictures with an untouched Alox (red) wood saw and the modified one. (the last picture shows how sharp the saw's top was)

They also works as a wood scraper for fine shavings.

Well my delicate hands dont like the sharp edges either. :D  I do the same thing to the keyring nub, youd be surprised at how much more comfortable it is after you round over the sharp edges.

Yes, I actually wonder why this is left like that, since Victorinox polishes everything else and is often ctitisized regarding the polished screwdrivers, handles on the Swisstool...

Apart from being used as a firesteel or wood-scraper, as mentioned previously, I see no other reason.

Usually it is those things you do not expect to be sharp that end up cutting you or creating blisters..
