Assuming one starts to create the first end of a rivet from a straight rod.  What are the best methods to hold it?  Putting it in a vice may deform the rod.  I would be working with the 2.2mm rod here.  I've been trying to come up with other methods to hold it, including a close fit hole drilled in a piece of hard steel.  But the rod would probably need to be pushed out from the other side once finished?

Make some clamp plates/blocks:

You probably don't even need to get that fancy - a couple of shallow grooves in two pieces of aluminium or brass would do for a few rivets.

I have used  the soft jaws in my vice which works ‘OK’

Everything’s adjustable

Just cut the rod ends to plus 1mm each end, and start hammering, works fine for me.

I form the head by holding the rod in the chuck of a cordless drill and peening it with the drill running.

This makes a nice symmetrical head.

I've got a drill press, which I can remove the chuck invert it an set it on a table.  I'll give that a try.
