DSLR at the zoo (Pic Heavy)
on: April 18, 2015, 07:20:27 AM
Though my cell phone camera is really a nice one (Galaxy S5) it is not in the same league as a DSLR, and the zoo was the perfect place to take advantage of the new toy.  I am still learning, and I am pleased with these photos even though I can see room for improvement.

so,  here we go

Nice crisp pictures  :D

I think some play with the highlights/shadow options on a picture software will make them really "pop" and be poster grade.

Excellent pics my friend :tu:  You've got some good timing with a lot of the shots you took.

I agree that they should be touched up, and I am playing with Dark Table and RawTherapee.  (I am on linux, and these are free)

I am trying to learn what I am doing, so I can do it correctly, right now all of these pictures are untouched except for 1 or two crops, and 1 that I rotated about 10 degrees.

I shot RAW + JPEG,  and I filled up a 32GB card and half of a 16GB card.  I went to JPG only when shooting the rapid fire stuff.

I use Photoshop, if I have too, but the free picassa Google software suffices for 99% of my pictures (not so good with sharpening)

I also have Gimp,  it is a Photoshop type application, it is also free.  the User interface is not contained in one window, the toolbar area is a window, the right side layer are (in Photshop) is a seperate window, and the picture area is another window.
I hated this UI choice,  UNTIL I GOT a multiple monitor setup,   now the picture edit area is 100% of a screen, the other stuff is on another monitor.
