Modders taking on 84mm projects?
on: April 18, 2015, 01:53:19 PM
So I finally figured out what I'm looking for in a custom SAK. The bad news is that it's 84mm   Anyone know of a good modder taking on 84mm projects?

Is it super secret or can you tell us all your plan?

Ha. Definitely not super secret. And not completely thought out, but since you asked....

For a long time I was thinking about getting a custom 93mm, and I'm sure I still will someday, but I finally committed to the idea that I really like my skeletool and the most useful custom SAK i can get will be something that complements the Skele. So I'm leaning towards the 84mm so that it can sit in my coin pocket without peaking out the top.

I'm thinking a 3 layer with scissors, saw, one opener ground down to a technicians screwdriver. If I go Alox, I'm hoping it can be as easy as picking up a Cadet+saw or micro-farmer and throwing scissors on top of the main blades back spring, and I'll leave the bottle opener opposite the small driver. If I go regular scales, then I'd need to see how creative the modder can get with backtools...if a technicians driver can be placed on the back then I'd rethink the driver layer a bit, but if not then it would be similar to the envisioned Alox layout with an awl and corkscrew on the bottom. Figure I'll see what the modder has to say.

I've been trying to figure out the perfect Skeletool companion for a long time...hoping this will be it!

There are so few tools that can be added to the 84 mm frame, low availability, and high cost, I just got annoyed with the frame and gave them up.

The demand for adding scissors is high though so I will revisit the frame again once Ive caught up on other jobs, and make some backsprings for adding scissors, redesigned enough to not require significant modding of the 91mm scissors as I used to have to do.

If you havent seen my old thread on this have a look.

The expensive part will always be 84mm scissors.
its possible to use wenger scissors, or for greater flexibility build all wenger (less backlayer)

all the 91mm backlayer should be possible on the 84mm victorinox. An opener spring should go with a 84mm saw to do a backlayer screwdriver and retain an awl, scissors with a knife spring would fit the 'hook'

seriously contemplating using cadet alox scales on a all wenger build myself

After eyeballing the respective Wenger and Vic 85/84mm parts, I could swear the center spring holes don't match, so the Vic springs can't be used with Wenger liners, and vice versa.

Yep they are different pivot locations.  I do like some of the wenger parts like the wrench, but its just too expensive for me to buy them and especially in any quantity.

I may have a go at adding wenger scissors to Vic 84 frame. I have done wenger pliers on it so I guess I will have to try it

Wenger scissors or saw fit fairly easily. But you need to sacrifice a Recruit for the springs.

Cadet with Wenger scissors...

Vic 84mm scissors on the orange, Wenger 85mm scissors in the red.

Do any of you guys know if the small blade, nail file, or anything else can take the place of the can opener in the 84mm?

Could you get the 93mm inline awl on there someplace?

On older style opener springs yes a small blade fits.  On newest style, it is made to only work with can opener.

(Image removed from quote.)

And I would assume this only works with a solid back spring from a knife with no backside tools.  I have the back spring from an older model that included an awl and it looks more like the newer style shown in the photo with the cut out.

Has anyone tried the Wenger Flat Philips on the 84mm?

my dream 84mm Mod would be a cadet with...

small blade (or sharpened file) and large blade
scissor (vic or wenger)
opener and flat philips
