Kosmo's Yeoman
on: April 21, 2015, 12:31:40 AM
While my 84mm custom ideas are on hold for now, I decided to move ahead on making some custom knives from my Champion.

My initial thoughts were to build a Scientist.  But I think I will use the scissors, since they are already included in the Compact and build a Yeoman.

I finally got up the courage to break down my old Champion.  I got this knife on my first trip to Switzerland in 1983.  I figure, if I can use it's DNA to create several custom knives, I don't feel bad about taking it apart.  I have at least 5 knives in mind from these parts.

Champion parts:

Compact and parts for a Yeoman:

Are you going for the original or remake layout?

I would like to do an original if I'm not going to run into complications. Although it will not be an exact copy of an original.  I'm going to use the hook with the nail file that comes with the Compact for example.

I assume the modern version was done that way due to the phillips hitting the outer liner.  Did the old one not have that problem as the driver was longer?  I dont have any of the old style parts any longer.

My own preference is for the phillips to be in the center layer as it feels more like a regular screwdriver that way instead of having it off center.

Both phillips are much the same in how they just sit on the liner.

I too like the phillips in the middle layer and I like the scissors on the side.

The old parts in the new layout works well for me. Wish I had the nail file hook to complete it.

Use a old style wenger Philips driver ;). It will fit on a 84 frame with very little work. Also check out cybeers mods in sakwiki if they are still there. I know he did one similar.

Setting the tension on these springs while assembling is a smurf in the smurf.  Got to find a different technique.  I am trying to reuse the pins from my Champion in the Yeoman.  Although they are long enough, perhaps using longer (new) pins embedded in a supporting assembly board makes this easier?

Not really.  The scissor spring is the hardest to do, IME.  Try getting the liner on with the spring alongside one of the main tools (in the open position), pinch everything tight with your fingers then use a small screwdriver to push down on the end of the spring by the tang.  Push hard enough and it'll slip under the tang of the tool, and the liners will close up holding everything together.   You'll get it in the end. :tu:

More knives I thinking about making in this Compact theme:

"Angler Compact" (Compact plus fish scaler)
"Mountaineer Compact" (aka "Trail Guide") (Compact plus file)
"Grand Prix Compact" (Compact plus file and corkscrew swapped out for a phillips)
"Huntsman Compact" (Compact with wood saw)
"Fieldmaster Compact" (Compact with wood saw and corkscrew/phillips swap).

One day I'll make a "Special Mechanic" or a "Deluxe Tinker Compact" :D
