Emerson/Kershaw knife, the CQC-7K 6034T
on: May 07, 2015, 11:29:34 PM
All of us who are waiting until an Emerson is cheaper are really saying we are waiting until they license the design to Kershaw and start making it in China.

I just bought such an Emerson/Kershaw knife, the CQC-7K 6034Tat like a third the cost of the pureblood Emerson it was derived from.  I like my E/K better, it has a more ergonomic handle.  I wasn't looking for it but it's one of those knives that once you hold it in your hand in the store you know you are going to buy it.  The blade is sort of a hybrid tanto/bowie that just gets it right.

I like having both the disc and wave pocket hook opener options, another refinement of the Chinese variant.  It's a nice compliment to a multitool like a traditional SAK that has no one hand opening blade.

PM me if you want one of my kidneys for your SOG TiNi multitool.

OK, both my kidneys.

I love the Kershaw/Emerson line. Excellent knives for a fair price. Fit and finish on the ones I have owned was great. They are coming out with a CQC-4KXL. The CQC-4K was my favorite so them making it in a larger size has me excited! They also changed the handle color and blade. Instead of the blade being black it now has the same finish as the CQC-6K and 7K.

A dear friend got me a Mini Commander a couple years ago that I really dig.  I remember when the Kershaw/Emersons were released I was excited, I've still yet to get one.

Apologies for digging up a zombie thread, mods if you want to move this to a new thread or close it that's fine with me. I am just curious to ask how did these Kershaw Emerson knives stand up to wear and tear after a couple of years? I'm thinking of getting a cqc 7k. Any of the reviews I've seen on youtube were all done when these knives came out first. They seem great value

Did they free up a bit with wear?
Did the lock ever let anybody down?
What is edge retention like?

Thanks for any info.

I had a CQC6K, didn't use it much but I was impressed by it, will buy a CQC10K soon.

Not sure. I had a few models from the line but sold them all before they saw any real use.

I recently got myself a kershaw cqc 6k which is pretty decent. It is not flawless but given the price, the fit and finish is pretty nice.  It's razor sharp out of the box but the grind is a little bit slightly uneven and a bit rough if you are OCD but it is easy to be fixed.  8Cr13MoV is a decent budget steel.  It holds fairly good edge and very easy to be maintained.  It is a bit big for my taste but I like it and foresee some good use.

I have 3; CQC-6K, CQC-5K and CQC-7K

The CQC-7K was acquired to replace a CQC-7 that purchased at a flea market in 1999 or 2000, before I ever heard of Emerson, that was my tool box knife, the chisel grind, was great for scraping gaskets from blocks, and other jobs requiring a sharp flat edge.
It grew legs and walked away from a job site, not to be seen again.   The 7K version is good, but not identical, yet I would have never used the original the way I did, if I knew it was a $200+ folder. I picked it up for around $50.

The CQC-6K was my first Emerson/Kershaw pick.  The value is great, Love the blade, just wish it had dual sided handle.  It mostly sets in my knife box and is fondled when I am pondering trip plans.  But mostly because of my CQC-5K...

This has is a knife I use frequently for work, prepping cables, cutting boxes, or any tasks I need a hardy blade for and stay under length for job site restrictions.   It compliments my ST300 or Rebar, and stays in pocket when those others are removed from my belt during my week aonf job sites.

It has been hard, and I will share pictures in separate reply.   For the $25 I spent, this has been a powerhouse investment and if lost would be replaced asap.   Steel is great and have only sharpened twice in two years, touch it up monthly with ceramic sticks, but stays hair shaving sharp with little effort.  Pictures to follow...

Thanks LoopCutter, looks like these can stand up to a bit of hardship so. The black on yours still looks pretty good. Losing your Emerson was tough. Any issues with the lock on the cqc 6k?

I had no issues on mine either.

One thing worth mentioning, the screws are kinda soft, if you need to work on them make sure you use the right size driver and be careful not to strip the heads.

Excellent advice. I noticed this as well. The hardware they use is not the best. No complaints for the price point though.

Ya, saw that in a few reviews, one suggestion was to heat the screws with a soldering iron to melt the loctite. Are the screw threads soft as well?

I didn't have problem with the thread striping, just the head.
I use the really small philips driver from Leatherman bit kit to work on them to avoid stripping.

Just want to raise another question regarding the lock up of kershaw cqc.

As said, my 6K had a rock solid lock up with no play at all. However, it has a kind of late lock up new out of the box at about 60%.

After a few days of good use (and play/friddle of course :D ) I noticed the frame lock bar has moved forward to about 80%.

Yes.... I have been being very mean to this guy by flicking and waving it open like 50 times a day just for fun when I am carrying it but it is wearing off way too fast than expected.

Anyone of you having the kershaw CQC for a few years can share the wearing progress of your lock bar? The structure of the CQC is solid and I think the blade won't snap even if the lock bar move all the way to the right but I would worry about blade play if the lock is too easy to wear.

My lockup is the same as when new on the 5K and I use that the most frequent.

I wonder if the pivot point is loose allowing some play on your 6K?

Thanks LC for your reply.  No, just checked and no blade play. It seems it doesn't move any further...  I will use it for a while more and see if it keeps moving.
